    Lewis's Department Store

In recent years House of Fraser had a bar on the first floor which I have used a few times. Sandwiches and light meals were available. I think the store is still open from comments on the Rackhams thread but I have not been in for years

    Private Railways In Birmingham

Hope this helps. The old railways overlaid on the modern Google Maps. Also shows the Corporation tramlines. I have centred the map on the approx N/S line of Nechells Place & Devon St. Dark Blue - LNWR, Yellow - Midland Rlwy, Magenta - Corp Tramways

    Moseley Kings Heath Line

I have just checked the timetables. West Midlands Railways used to run a couple of trains from Worcester to Birmingham New Street over this line on Saturdays. presumably just to maintain the drivers' route knowledge. I see these are no longer included.

    Moseley Kings Heath Line

Probably they think that Camp Hill is too close to the city centre to be worth while bearing in mind that the train journey from New Street does take a roundabout route before it gets to Camp Hill. The eventual plan is to build two new curves in Bordesley to bring the trains into Moor Street but...

    Pubs Of The Past

I walked past the Woodman one night last week. All the lights on but did not see many people inside.

Still in store. They were supposed to come back in Centenary Square when all the work is finished.

    Snow Hill Station

I and a friend travelled on the last train day from Snow Hill to Wolverhampton Low level and back. While in Snow Hill we were routing among the debris in one of the offices and came across a cast iron kettle with BR (W) on it. We left it because it wasn't a GWR kettle. I have regretted that ever...

    Air raid shelters

The place where they are recorded as having died may not be where they were sheltering. I have four relatives who died in an air raid, two were shown as having died at what I assume was their address, one was recorded as having died at an address which would have been across the road and another...

    Rackhams Store

I was talking to a farmer a few weeks ago. He said he was more scared of his cockerel than he was of his bull.

Its good to know some old buildings are being used and not destroyed

I had not picked this thread up and was about to post a report I had from a friend who has just looked in. Apparently they have things of interest to children this week of half term. This is an item of interest that my friend has told me about In the basement (former strong-room) they've...

Metro Extension to Centenary Square and beyond

Had a message from a friend today who lives in Edgbaston and walked along Broad Street. He wrote The sub-station to provide power to the tram was installed on the foundations within Five Ways roundabout last weekend. As there are no overhead wires at that point, I presume it must feed the short...

Metro Extension to Centenary Square and beyond

I have seen this report on another forum The over head wires have been replaced over the new junction, but are currently "tensioned" with a block and tackle. Services terminate at St Chads late 25th Oct/early 27th so I presume this is for sorting out the overhead. Elsewhere the road markings...

    Artists Who Painted Birmingham Landscapes

Bus routes change over the years but I have looked up 107 and it was Birmingham to Sutton Coldfield via Perry Barr and New Oscott. The Midland Red is a pre-war bus some of which survived until the late 1950s. The Corporation buses are war-time buses with the dark roof.

    Artists Who Painted Birmingham Landscapes

Following on from my from my posts above, It seems that there is a Ron Smith also known as 'Smudga'. This picture has just been posted on Facebook by someone who has seen it in a charity shop. Someone who used to work in W H Smith has said she used to arrange for him to come in to do book signings.

Scams: Telephone, email, texts, other 2021

I had a missed call on my mobile yesterday from a Crewe number. The only person I know in Crewe is someone whose email contacts were hacked many years ago and I still occasionally get emails purporting to come from her which I delete.

    Snow Hill Station

The reason for the Yellow 37s is that the in-cab signalling system on the Cambrian Coast Line restricts the trains which can work the line. I believe Network Rail has 4 37s which are fitted with the special signalling system so that they can carry out PWay work.

    Snow Hill Station

Thank you for your reply. Sometimes when I think of things from my past I sometimes wonder if I imagined it. It gets frustrating when I do remember something and people say it is impossible. One of my favourite memories is of seeing the Cambrian Coast Express at Snow Hill double headed with two...
