    Children's games - late 19th century

We played a similar game. One person would run clockwise along Mapledene and into Greenvale and the other person would run in the opposite direction. First one back was the winner. This could be adapted to include bikes, scooters and trolleys etc.

    OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

One of our favourite lunch time restaurants when we were courting. My wife to be worked at the Beacon Buildings on Stratford Rd. and on my days off we would dine here. They used to feature a "Business man's" lunch, 3 course meal for about 3/- or thereabouts, good value and great food.

    Your oldest domestic tool

Courtesy of Trigger in Only Fools & Horses  I do have a garden hoe given to me by my grandfather in the 50s and I still use it regularly for weeding etc. weather permitting.

    Our childhood toys

I can remember forcing hawthorn berries down a bike pump and really building up the pressure. When the berry shot out it really stung especially if it hit exposed skin.

    Keeping Warm

I can recall as a child having Dad's old military greatcoat over the blankets and the room being heated by a Valor paraffin heater, which had a patterned perforated top which sent out a wonderful yellow pattern onto the ceiling. I was also fascinated by the frost that formed on the windows, to...

    Chatfield Bigamous Marriage?

Thank you for the link I went through the list and the nearest I could find was Solomon Lieser born 1860 in Russia. Given the date of embarkation from Liverpool and the arrival in New York this is the right passage. Now this raises a few questions. Did he actually board the ship or is S.Levin...

    Chatfield Bigamous Marriage?

Thanks for that. I have made an appeal on another geneaology site for anyone with the facilities to do so, to make a check on arrivals to America during the relative dates but so far with no success. I think that one of them is a bigamist but whether it's Show or whether it's Emily I don't know...

    Chatfield Bigamous Marriage?

I understand what you're saying about the acceptance of the marriage amongst the Jewish community but that wouldn't affect the legality of the marriage and I wouldn't think that there was a divorce in those days as I don't think they could have afforded the costs involved.

    Chatfield Bigamous Marriage?

Despite extensive search on newspaper archive sites and other genaeology sites no trace I'm afraid. Perhaps I'll have to draw a line under this one.

    Chatfield Bigamous Marriage?

Janice that's great thank you. It seems more than a coincidence don't you think? Tell me did you find this on the UK version of Ancestry or the international one? I searched and searched on UK ancestry with no results whatsoever.

    Chatfield Bigamous Marriage?

Yes I'm afraid so but thinking more about it I'm beginning to think more along Jan's lines and that Show was the bigamist. Given the short amount of time between the two marriages and the birth of the child Joseph my feelings are that Show deserted Emily and her child and fled to America. The...

    Chatfield Bigamous Marriage?

Yes Lyn I did. The 1871 census has Thomas' parents being born in Dudley and Worcester respectively. Their oldest child on the census was born about 1852 in Birmingham. The next child Lucy was born 1855 in USA as was Thomas bn. 1858. The next child James was born in 1864 in Birmingham so his...

    Chatfield Bigamous Marriage?

MWS Thanks for that, I hadn't seen that before as I was searching under the surname Levein. Lyn that's how I saw the name. I tried a search under that name for immigration to UK but no luck. Jan thanks for that. Is this on Ancestry? My searches don't show this and for arrivals into USA you...

    Chatfield Bigamous Marriage?

I have a family tree member named Emily Chatfield Bn. 7/7/1863 in Manchester. Died 1936 Birmingham. On May 10th 1887 she married a man named Show Levein at Bishop Ryder. She is described as a spinster, he as a bachelor. The following year 1888 they had a son named Joseph Show Levein. After this...
