    Was he a Deserter?

Aston Lad, Thank you. Certainly looks like my guy but interestingly discharged for misconduct after being convicted by Civil authorities, no mention of desertion. Perhaps he was in custody and civil court when he was due back on duty and therefore posted as a deserter. Not knowing much about the...

    Was he a Deserter?

Perhaps he was found not guilty and only went AWOL.

    Was he a Deserter?

Not him. My William Groves was born on 1901.

    Was he a Deserter?

Does any member have access to Fold 3 on Ancestry? If so I wonder if they could look up and see what happened to an ancestor of mine. According to Ancestry, William Groves, regimental number 5241748, was posted as a deserter from the Worcester Regiment on 21st May 1921. The place of desertion is...

    Gardens of your childhood

Dad had an aviary in the back garden. He had both Budgies and Canaries but later just concentrated on Canaries. He was a member of the South Birmingham Cage Bird Society and I can remember going with him when he entered birds into their shows which were held in the upstairs function room at the...

After an absence of over twelve months the Bullfinches are back! I think they have been isolating due to Covid :DToday we had 2 males and a female visit. The one male was very shy and despite my efforts I couldn't get a picture of the 2 males together.

Alfred J Wilson, Royal Irish Rifles.

Can only see the 3 girls on 1911 census

Alfred J Wilson, Royal Irish Rifles.

I'm assuming these are the erroneous Manchester Alfred J. Wilson,s offspring? Neither have I but I have found a birth registered to an Emily Wilson 3rd quarter 1909 in Aston.

Alfred J Wilson, Royal Irish Rifles.

If he died in 1906 he couldn't have fathered Emily whose age is given as 1 yr. on the 1911 census.

Alfred J Wilson, Royal Irish Rifles.

Well done to everyone. It does seem that my ancestors were not the ones in my original post. I've only just got back in and haven't had time to look for the baptism and births for the children yet. My thanks to everyone Jim.

Alfred J Wilson, Royal Irish Rifles.

Thanks to you both for your quick responses. I wonder if the "hint" was for the right person or perhaps it was for someone else with the same name who also married an Elizabeth? The 1901 census has his occupation as an uncoupler (?) on railway and a son named Allen (?) J Wilson with them. Voters...

Alfred J Wilson, Royal Irish Rifles.

I am trying to find the place and date of this distant ancestor's death. A recent "hint" thrown up by Ancestry is the following. The 1911 census lists his wife Elizabeth Lucy Wilson as a widow living with her father and 3 daughters. The youngest girl is only 1 year old and so I'm presuming...

    Bus Tokens

Would that also apply in the early 1960s?

    Bus Tokens

We used them when travelling from school which was in Vicarage Road, Kings Heath to our swimming lessons at Moseley Road Baths. They were given out to pupils by our games teacher. We walked from school to Kings Heath and used the tokens on the number 50 bus from there. It always puzzled me why...

Moving away but always a Brummie

I've lived away from Brum since the 1970s apart from a few years in Solihull. I now live in County Durham where brummie accents are rare indeed. Every now and then I will pass a comment about something on the telly or radio only to be told by my wife, also a born and bred brummie, " That sounded...

    George, My Great Grandson

Congratulations Aston Lad, but I'm afraid you're mistaken about the good news. I'm celebrating my 73rd birthday today and it's wonderful to be born on "April Fools Day". Once they know people never forget your Birthday. :D

    OS maps showing house numbers

MWS thanks for your kind offer but I'm looking at looking at a lot of places in Birmingham. In the meantime I am following up another lead and if that doesn't work out then maybe I'll take up your offer if it's still open.
