In the 1950s neither could I afford such an item. I picked this up at a local auction a few years ago. I agree about your comments on the superb artwork and storylines.

In the 50s you could send away for a Dan Dare pocket watch with an animated figure of Dan Dare firing a "ray gun" and an engraved Eagle logo on the rear. These are much sought after by collectors and are quite rare to get hold of nowadays. Shown below is my Eagle watch depicting Jeff Arnold...

    OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

Re post#512 I do believe the dapper looking chap with the sack barrow in the centre of the picture is a trader named Billy Downing who sold fruit from one of the market stalls.

Scams: Telephone, email, texts, other 2021

My broadband and telephone contract with Virgin media was due to end last month. Virgin duly e-mailed to advise me and to tell me the new contract terms and prices. At the time my monthly amount was £34 having just risen from £29.99. The new rate would be £49.99 per month with a review in April...

    OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

Really enjoying this thread especially the "corner shop" photos. In the early 70s I worked as a van salesman for Reckitt & Colman calling upon grocery, hardware and occasionally newsagents trying to sell the shopkeepers products such as Mr Sheen, Harpic and other cleaning products. I have...

    Comics

My earliest recollection of comics is one called Jack & Jill. Dad used to paste the centre spread on to a piece of hardboard and then using his skills and an electric jig saw made several jigsaw puzzles for my sister and me. I progressed to the Beano and Dandy, then on to the Lion and Tiger...

Just after we were married my wife, along with others, was transferred to this building from the Beacon Buildings on Stratford Rd. She worked there until left to have our first child.

Old style food still going strong

When were in Spain rabbits were sold in the local supermarket. My wife used to cook them slowly in cider. Very tender and as Imr3103 says it tasted very similar to chicken. Used to enjoy it but don't eat it now.

Saturday Sweet Van Shard End 1950's

In the early 50s we moved onto a newly built estate in Sheldon. We had a similar vehicle coming round once or twice a week. This was a converted coach/charabanc and sold groceries, vegetables, cigarettes and sweets etc. 2oz of midget gems was my preferred choice when Mom could afford it :yum

I was also there, right behind the goal and can remember a complete stranger standing next to me nearly crushing me to death in his celebratory hug! Lovely to see all the old bar advertising. I collect breweriana figures so it's lovely to see these pub/bar interiors.

Aaaah! Memories of Berni Inns! A schooner of Harveys Bristol Cream before your meal, Prawn cocktail starter, a steak cooked to your preference and then as a dessert Black Forest Gateau. Afterwards as a "digestif" a Gaelic coffee. 60s dining perfection!!!

My Dad used to have brains on toast at least once a week. I can't remember how Mom cooked the brains but my main memory of them was Dad smothering them in pepper. I tried some of them as a lad but it was the texture of them in my mouth that put me off not the taste. As an adult I would probably...

Interesting picture Mike. Would the driver be a police officer perhaps coming from Steelhouse Lane or Victoria Law courts do you think?

    sayings

Dad had a few of these which always brought a smile to our faces. He used to say "crayon" for crane, a tarpaulin was always a "Tarpoleon" and a certificate was called a "Susstificate":)

As a lad I used to enjoy a "crisp sandwich", just plain crisps between two slices of white bread and marge. Guess what I had yesterday for my lunch yesterday? Just as tasty as I remembered although nowadays it's wholemeal bread and low fat spread:yum

One of the problems I find is that a lot of genuine callers i.e. hospitals, doctors surgery, dentist etc. come up on my phone as number witheld. Normally, if I am not expecting a call, I ignore these numbers but it can create problems, Just before Xmas I had applied for a renewal of my driving...

We call it corned beef hash as well. Up here in the North East they have a variation called a corned beef pie in which layers of corned beef, sliced cooked onion and sliced cooked potato are baked in a pastry case. My daughter in law is a dab hand at this.!
