Book: Crime and Punishment in Victorian times

I had forgotten that I had already made a post on this topic. Today I was working on my family tree and was directed via an Ancestry hint to the Birmingham Gaol Habitual Offenders Register. Sad to say yet another of my ancestors was featured there. I decided to look through the register and was...

    Nailers and nailmaking

On my paternal family tree is a branch whose name is Priest who lived in Rowley Regis area. My 4 x grandfather is Benjamin Priest and his wife Sophie. The 1861 census has their occupations when they were in their 60s as nailmakers. The whole family seems to have been in the nail and chain making...

    The Genealogist

Maurice, I was very interested in your post. Currently I use Ancestry and have several trees on there showing different branches of my family. I had never heard of Brothers keeper but using the link you provided I looked at the site and things that you can do on there. You say moving from one...

    White Swan, Holloway Head

Thanks for this info Mike. Sadly Thomas died in 1900 , hence Martin Priestly having the licence by then. I'm still trying to find what happened to his family after his death.

    White Swan, Holloway Head

Mike that's great, thank you. I have just looked at the 1891 Census and the family are still there but as you say at number 59. The building is not named as the White Swan but his occupation remains as a beer retailer.

    White Swan, Holloway Head

Does anyone have any knowledge of the pub or it's location. This was taken from the 1881 census and shows an entry for one of my ancestors on my mother's side,

    Lewis's Department Store

Lento I don't dispute this but on the one occasion when I went in I was told that they hadn't any. This was around 1965. Were lewis's stocking these items you mentioned then?

    Lewis's Department Store

Lento You are so right about being the best deli in Birmingham and I loved going there and being overwhelmed by the fragrances of coffee, meats and bread. The only time I was disappointed was in the 60s when I went in there with my German pen pal who was staying with me in search of German Black...
