Telephone history: Telephone Service in Birmingham

My father was a telephone/teleprinter engineer in the 1950's/60's and I discovered the other day that he worked on the telephone exchange which was installed in Sutton during the Jamboree in the park in 1957. I hadn't realised that there had been an exchange specifically for this meeting...

    Aston Hall

Haven't found Alice's birth certificate but on her marriage in 1933 her father is listed as 'Hall Attendant' and her address given as 'South Lodge'. Incidentally my mother was a bridesmaid and it was nice to see her signature again as a witness.

    Aston Hall

Thanks Mike, I will try to dig out Alice Partridge's birth certificate which may give me more information.

    Aston Hall

Mom's brother Sam married a lady who had been born in one of the lodges at Aston Hall. Her father was a gardener. I expect there must have been a great number of staff needed to take care of the grounds as I seem to remember that they stretched up to somewhere near Perry Barr when the hall was...

    Library Of Birmingham 2013

Hi Again Keith, Just had a discussion with my husband and he thinks that, provided the information from the inquest is transposed, there shouldn't be a problem. Therefore, if we can't send you copies of the original documents I will type out the contents for you.

    Library Of Birmingham 2013

Hi Keith, I'm not sure of the rules (they keep changing!) for photographing material for someone else's use but my husband is visiting the library in the next few weeks to do some research for me. If it's at all possible he will photograph your inquest for you and I will email it. I'll let you...

Gravelly Hill - Slade Road / The Slade

Lyn, I'm pretty sure that as you say the shops at 341 have been demolished and a whole new row built. They were a long time in the building but when we went past some time ago several of them were occupied. At first I thought they were going to be residential but they are separate shop units.

    George, My Great Grandson

Lovely news, Aston Lad. He's a smasher. There must have been something in the air nine months ago. My 3rd GGC, Teddy, was born on the 29th, and the 4th GGC, Willow, on 30th. Hopefully that's it for a while as it's beginning to make me feel old!

James and Robinson, Bristol Street, B'ham

Last night I went to a talk about WW1 at the Erdington Historical Society. It was about a despatch rider who later became a pilot. He had to provide his own motorbike and was immediately made a corporal because private soldiers were not allowed to talk to officers. As he was delivering messages...

Chester Road Bridge Accident - Poor Image

That's a good one Jonob. It shows the houses on Chester Road which were demolished to make way for the car park and also the lack of railings on the 'Erdington side' of the road. Thank you.

Chester Road Bridge Accident - Poor Image

Thanks Pedro, I was under the impression that the flooding only occurred after the road was lowered but this photograph from August 1948 shows quite deep water. It must have been lowered again after the incidents in Mike's post. This picture is from Marian Baxter's 'Sutton Coldfield, the Second...

Chester Road Bridge Accident - Poor Image

Thank you both. Mike that's a really good cutting as it ties the date of the bridge to between April and August so not many issues of the Mail to go through as I first thought. Unfortunately it was a daily paper but I could do it a bit at a time.

Chester Road Bridge Accident - Poor Image

I realise that this is a very poor photo. It's a scan of a photocopy of a newspaper cutting. You can see what a near miss the bus (No. 28) is having but the lorry carrying the tank wasn't so lucky. The road was lowered not long afterwards causing different problems with flooding. Such an...

Book: Manors of Aston Parish by John Morris Jones

That's really helpful SDUG. There used to be a full set in Erdington Library, as described by Mike above, but last time I went in most of it was missing.

    Stepping down as moderator

Sorry to hear that Viv, but I do understand where you're coming from. I have edited the church magazine for the past eight years but now feel that I want to devote my time to other things. Lovely that you'll have more time to spend with the little ones - the time with them goes by in a flash. Enjoy!

Newhall Street unique house of Dr Melson

Viv, I was wondering if your unique house is on this photo? The caption gives it as 'Dental Hospital 1890 on the corner of Newhall Street'. I thought the dental hospital started life somewhere around The Priory and was opened in the 1850's. I always thought that this photo showed Newhall...
