    Yenton Garage , Erdington , Birmingham 23

I seem to remember that there were actually two garages, one to serve the traffic heading towards Beggars Bush and one for the traffic towards The Tyburn. Attached is an image from a newspaper cuttings book from Sutton Library. Post #3 shows the garage by the Yenton pub and this photo shows the...

Definitely sheep John! My dad would have been 5 in 1918 and lived at Salford Bridge - wonder if he ever saw sheep being hereded down the road.

United Reformed Church, Holly Lane, Erdington.

Alan, As promised I looked for photos of your church today. I'm not sure if this newspaper cutting is of any use. It's a photostat of a newscutting. If not it has the date of the newspaper on so you would be able to look up the original at Central Library in Birmingham. It's from 'The News'...

    Little Hope.

Sorry Notsharp, I can't help with the identification but it's a smashing photo. My first thought on seeing the date was 'I wonder how many of them came back from WW2?" They all look so happy - hope someone can help.

    Avery Scales W&T Avery history

Thanks Lyn. I thought that would be the case. Graham and a friend are looking into John Wyatt's inventions at the moment so I'll do a bit of emailing to see if there is any hope of visiting. If we do manage to get in I'll let you know so that you can come too. It's a faint hope but nothing...

    Avery Scales W&T Avery history

I noticed from the Avery Scales website that the museum at Soho Foundry has now closed. Does anyone know what's happened to all the exhibits, especially the weighbridge? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

United Reformed Church, Holly Lane, Erdington.

Hello Alan, Welcome to the forum. I missed your thread when you posted it but went to Erdington Historical Society last night and it was announced that you were searching for a picture of your church doors. I know I've seen one but where I just can't remember. Firstly, I expect you've tried...

    Fountains.

There used to be a monument in St Philip's churchyard to Colonel Burnaby who I think fought in the Sudan campaign.

    Birmingham museum and art gallery.

Maria, I think they opened it for limited access in the lead up to and during the Commonwealth Games. As I understand it there is considerable work to be done including updating the electrics (including lifts) and carrying out repairs to the roof. It closed on 13th November. We are hoping to go...

    Lichfield Road Aston

Well done Lyn, definitely the same shabby gates and stone gateposts. I'm not familiar with that part of Birmingham so it's really good to see all your pics. What was the name of the church?

    Lichfield Road Aston

Pedro, you're a mind reader. I was just going to post that I think it could be Victoria Road. I remember Mom (who was born just off Victoria Road) telling me how nice the road was at one time and there were some large houses there. Can you see anything that could be the building on the left on...

    Lichfield Road Aston

I don't think so Pedro as the buildings either side appear to front straight on to the road.

    Lichfield Road Aston

Well Viv & oldMohawk this one has us both puzzled! According to Robert Darlaston the No. 5 ran an inter-suburban route from Lozells to Gravelly Hill which closed in 1950 but I can't place this picture. It looks like a church or a chapel on the left but the only one shown in my Bartholomew's...

    Erdington

Pedro, I think the clincher is that the rail has no bend and there is a definite one at Chester Road also there's no footbridge which you can see in the far distance at Chester Road. The tall trees in the centre of the original photo would have been on what is now the Lyndhurst Estate but was...

Rivers : Forgotten Streams or Brooks of Birmingham

On old maps this appears as the Hawthorn Brook and used to supply the 'Swimming Bath' for the trainee priests at the College. It's also mentioned on the Birmingham Racing thread as it was a 'hazard' for the steeple chases held on Rabbit Warren Farm. I think someone posted on a different thread...

    Erdington

Pedro, the boundaries frequently change in this area and quite often around the early 1900's it appears as Erdington rather than Sutton as it is now. Here's a couple of pictures of Chester Road station for comparison taken around the same time.
