A Walk Down Summer Lane by John Douglas

That looks really interesting Peter, definitely something to look at later.

    Christmas preparations past and present

Every year I buy my daughter in law a tin of biscuits from M & S - last year it was a musical one with lights that played on the ceiling showing Santa's sleigh and reindeer gliding across. I think this year it's back to a house that can be used with a tealight. Definitely agree Viv, I love a...

    Christmas preparations past and present

We're down to just us two this year (our choice) although we will be seeing the family over the holiday. I usually make a Brazil nut and chestnut roulade for the main course with all the usual (veggie) trimmings. This year I have broken with tradition and will be buying everything. I visited M&S...

    Lynne Webb RIP

Very sad news and my sympathy is with the family at this sad time. She will be missed.

    Amy Russell New Oscott Burial

I looked at the 1911 census and I'm pretty sure that either they, or near neighbours, were living in a cottage part of Bush Cottages. From other research this was next to the Beggars Bush pub by the Chester Road entrance to Homebase.

    Amy Russell New Oscott Burial

Janice, The remains may have been removed to New Oscott but if I remember correctly they will be recorded under their original site. Maryvale Old Oscott was also an orphanage so there must have been some burials from there. (There are three multiple burials in St Michael's, Boldmere from local...

    Another One Bites The Dust!

Well said Lyn! I do love a good rant. In the 1950's the council slapped a compulsory purchase order on Graham's parents house and bought it for a paltry sum leaving the family with a mortgage. There's still a space where the house was!

    Amy Russell New Oscott Burial

Janice, I found it quite difficult to search at St Chad's as they didn't give guidance or assistance the time I went. I may have been unlucky! Sahar, the St Mary's on Chester Road. New Oscott, was and is a seminary for trainee priests. However, the convent of St Mary's was at Old Oscott...

    Amy Russell New Oscott Burial

Hi Janice, I was trying to work out which church she may have attended. Before the present St Nicholas' church was built there was a chapel of the same name (Pugin) in Boldmere Road which did have a burial ground but may have still been open in the 1920's. Demolished in the '60's. My other...

    Amy Russell New Oscott Burial

Looking at the 1911 census it looks as though Amy lived at 'Beggars Bush' and this, like other places around the area, hopped about from county to county. At the time of the census it appears to have been in Perry Barr which was in Handsworth, Staffs.

    Amy Russell New Oscott Burial

Hi Janice, I'm wondering if she was buried at Witton Cemetery? Catholic burials took place there and it was opened in 1863. The question also arises as to where she attended church - St Nicholas church in Boldmere was the nearest Catholic church to New Oscott but it doesn't have a burial...

Birmingham Nightclubs of the Past - Memories

We used to go to The Matador for lunch on a Saturday. They did a lovely 'cold table' and we always had a cheese salad (no onion).

Warstone Lane Stall and possible Grave location information, Saturday 28th October 2023.

Well done Strawberry Hunter. Some years ago I had real difficulty finding my 3x gt grandfather's grave and that of his son buried nearby. I got in touch with Handsworth who were looking after Warstone then and the lady I spoke to gave me wrong information so that led me astray. I've located the...

    Moseley Kings Heath Line

However big a park and ride car park is it's never big enough. I live by Chester Road station and parking in neighbouring streets, including ours, is a real problem. I'm sure most people on this forum used to walk to school or go public transport (two buses for me), these days people won't walk...

    Pubs in Erdington

    Pubs in Erdington

Was it definitely in Erdington Trendy? I found this from 2009 when I was looking for boxing at the Rose and Crown in Gravelly Lane. However, this pub is in Bromsgrove Street, Birmingham. Posted by JohnO. The 'Rose and Crown' was once the home of the reknown 'Imperial Amateur Boxing Club'...

    Holidays of the past

Can't remember whether I've posted this before but it's at New Brighton Lido (now sadly lost to storms), around summer 1948 - who remembers knitted swimsuits? They got longer with the water and were always still damp when you came to put them on the next day.

    City Centre Photographs

Thanks David but it wasn't the design of the cathedral I was referring to but the setting - one hemmed in by poor dwellings. It's a lovely, elegant building and it's so sad that Birmingham saw fit to demolish the Bishop's House to build a road. I agree that it has more to do with German churches...
