    Soaring Food Prices

I built a cold smoker many years ago, Richard, and smoked meat and fish, using apple wood chips. Pigeon breasts were made into an excellent pate. Hard boiled eggs, shelled of course, given a couple of hours cold smoked, were superb on brown bread and butter, with some white pepper. I gave the...

I'm a great fan of fish for breakfast, and having a fresh fish shop only a hundred yards from the house, is a bonus. Kippers smoked on the premises. Smoked haddock I also make my own Scotch eggs. A whole, roast Neep, is a cheap, tasty addition to a meal. Steve.

Yes, Pete, I remember them well. Any leftover pastry from the apple pies, was quickly turned into wee jam tarts, in just such tins. Nothing went to waste. Steve.

    IN OUR GARDEN 2024

About a week ago, I took cuttings from Fuchsias, Buddleia, and Hydrangeas, and they are not looking bad. I put three into a pot outside, and even they seem OK. Steve.

My folks ate a lot of rabbit, hence so did we kids. I still do, but only wild rabbits. We did not get much chance to try anything "exotic". I made another cake this morning, (baking as I type. It bought back memories of my mom baking cakes, with me and my brother waiting impatiently to clean...

That game pie looks superb, Pete. Winter food at its best. This week, I made a big batch of Chilli to get the freezer stocked up. I used 3 Kg. of venison in it. We have access to plenty of Game up here, so it is our main source of protein. These are Pheasant escalopes, which I make often...

    Home made traditional food

Yes. Offal was cheap and nourishing. When I worked in Brum, I used to buy half a pigs head from the Market, and take it to my dad. He would make Brawn, pressed in a big, white, crock bowl. Sliced, in-between two thick slices of Bloomer loaf, and plenty of butter. Not the healthy option, but...

We lived in a prefab, with quite a big garden, and had a couple of apple trees hence the apple pies. There were no kitchen scales, electric food mixer, non-stick tins, etc. yet everything turned out fine. I remember my mom accidentally doubling up on the sugar in a bread pud. It was superb...
