    the royal mint.icknield st

I used to go back to Moreton St regularly Lyn, right up until those back to backs were pulled down in 1971. It must have been one of the last streets to be demolished. My step mother was put into a high rise flat down at Nechels overlooking the railway.

Lyn, I had left Moreton St by 1964, but I was down in the area around the Mint very often. I would have popped in to meet Tony Britton if I had know he was in there.

Nor did I Lyn, but I knew he was a Brummie. He is one of my favourite actors, not around so much these days, he must be a great age now.

    Birmingham in 1950s

I always liked Richard Hudnut Egg Shampoo. It was good the way we could buy sachets in those days, instead of having to buy large bottles as we do now, only to find that we aren't keen on them. I remember Sebbix, Drene, Loxene, all shampoos I used to use.

What lovely old pics and memories for a lot of us. Can you imagine people being able to get close enough to watch the demolition of the Exchange building these days? Health and Safety would have a fit. Stoddards butchers shop where my dad worked until the day he died literally.

    Items that have faded away

Trevor speaking of making bottle lamps, do any of you remember those great big bottles that possible were used to take acid to factories? They had a name but I can't remember what it was. Anyway, we all seemed to have one at some time, either turned into a lamp or a bottle garden. Mine was a...

Yes Judy, they did have quite a high alcohol content in them. Even as an adult I remember feeling a bit whoozy too.

I remember drinking Sanatogen tonic wine, I wonder if that's still around too? I believe Halls and Sanatogen were to increase the intake of iron.

    Items that have faded away

Oh Judy, I remember cleaning our own typewriters too. I think we used methylated spirits on a brush because the carbon used to build up in the letters and become illegible. Those ribbons were an awful dirty job to replace, and my light coloured clutch handbags were always marked indelibly for...

    Items that have faded away

We always had a cup of Bovril after a swim. Most of the swiming baths had a cafe type place where we could buy hot drinks etc, but Bovril was always my favourite, and I still like it. Never tried it on toast Shortie.

    A.T.V. at Aston Cross

There were many like her too Big Fella, I knew quite a few in my office working days. They were always cheerful, and I hope they all ended up cared for like your mother in the end. As you say, RIP all those hard working ladies that are gone but not forgotten.

    A.T.V. at Aston Cross

Nice pic Big Fella, it would be hard to find those hard working ladies these days. Ladies like them used to be out early every morning cleaning the office's around Brum, polishing the brass name plates and scrubbing the steps.

Oh I remember Lux Flakes too sylvia, and used them for my jumpers when I was a teenager. I used to love to pick up a handful and sprinkle them like fairy dust. Like you, I haven't seen that product for a long time either.

My dad used to paint his corns with something in a small bottle and put on with a brush, and by golly it smelled like anaesthetic.

Items that havent faded away and still in use

I used to use Nailoid manicure cream when I was 15yrs old, and still use it. It hasn't changed it's perfume or consistency in all that time. Can't say that about many things can we? Brillo pads are not as nice as they used to be, the soap just seems bunged in somehow. They used to be a neat...
