    Garden & Gardening Tips

Thank you for this information Trevor. It doesn't sound too difficult to grow spuds in containers at all. When I lived in Sedgley, I used to shop in Blackheath. That was a long time ago, and the area has changed greatly since then. I see you mentioned going to Blackheath with regard to gardening.

    Birmingham in 1950s

Yes they would Viv. There were fabrics for curtains etc in these sort of designs too during the 1950's.. I have noticed lately that tea shops and hairdressing salons are going for these big flowery patterned wallpapers now. Well everything comes round again doesn't it? I didn't know that green...

I remember some of these Viv. I think the second one from the left would be bang up tpodate today. I believe these patterns were called 'Contemporary wall papers' in their day.

Thank you Paul for educating me. I now know what they were and how it all worked. It sounded a good idea, but if a lot of people used them, I bet the interest was worth having for the money lenders.

Lovely old pic of the General Stitcher. Look at all that space around it, it didn't look like that in the early 60's. Bet they never had MRSA in there.

    Aston hippodrome

I have many happy memories of the Aston Hip, and saw many famous people there. One unusual one was 'Jane' the cartoon girl from the daily Mirror.

Thats almost twice as much as the house in Moreton St terry, it must have been a better property because the dates you give do co-incide with the house we lived in.

I do remember the rent book, but have seem to remember going to some office in Brum with my step mother to pay it. Don't ever remember a rent man coming to the house. I believe they paid something like 6/- a week for the house in Hockley. I wonder if the original landlords sold some of these...

    Items that have faded away

Maria, I still have a bottle of Masumi, it came in a complete set with soap, talk and body lotion. It was bought for me by my boss in an office I worked in. I'd forgotten about Aqua Manda though.

Thank you Bernie, I did always think that these were privately owned. I would love to know who those landlords were.

I always thought that those houses were owned by private landlords Lyn, but I could be wrong. Perhaps someone on the Forum can come up with the answer to this. Glad you enjoyed Don't Wait Up, as you say they were a lot of these old comedies on TV worth watching. I liked Steptoe and Son too.

Still a handsome man terryb18. I did see him in a play at a theatre in the 1990's. Did anyone every watch him in the TV series 'Don't wait up'? He was so comical with his dry sense of humour.

Lyn, I suppose it was a better way of life for my step mother, because the back to backs where she was were in disrepair, and not suitable for an ageing person. The flats in Nechels were brand new when she moved into one, and she was happy at last to have a bathroom and a nice little kitchen...
