This advert for Radio Rentals was shown in the Sunday Mercury in March 1959. It shows the disparity between renting from 8 shillings and fourpence per week or buying from 67 guineas. There were many Radio Rentals shops in Birmingham with the city one being at 13 Piccadilly Arcade. Dave.

    Bomb damage in unidentified streets

Definitely Clementine Churchill on the far left in #115. According to the link in #117 Winston went that day to a factory that makes tanks and also to the Spitfire Works at Castle Bromwich. Still don't know the location of #115. Dave.

    Birmingham 1960s

Found this raffle ticket from December 1963. It cost 1 shilling and was from the Birmingham and District Branch of the NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children). I don't think I've won as I would have received a phone call by now but the prizes were interesting. The...

They Were Caught In Our Old Street Pics...

Definitely right Jim. I left Birmingham in 1967 and up until then the 37 would go all along the Stratford Road terminating at the Birmingham boundary in Hall Green. It went past the Warwick Road at the Mermaid but did not join it. Dave.

    Holidays of the past

I wonder how young you would have to be to see a hovercraft on your first visit to the seaside? Here is one taken yesterday at Southsea near Portsmouth. It is arriving after its 10 minute trip from the Isle of Wight. Dave.

    Steam Locos

Visited a part of the UK last weekend that I had not been to before. The visit included a ride on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, not far from Leeds, between Keighley and Haworth and back. Pulled on the return by an American steam engine, number 5820 of the United States of America...

    Royal Coronations : Birmingham response

At York Road School, Hall Green, we each had our photo taken for the Coronation. This was then inserted into a souvenir cardboard frame. Mine is below. The haircut was typical for the time, or was it just me? Dave.

Palmolive advert in #536 states at the bottom, "Dr. Dafoe says, Only gentle Palmolive for the Quins!". Dr. Allan Dafoe was a Canadian obstetrician best known for delivering and caring for the world-famous Dionne quintuplets, born May 28 1934. Dave.

Hi Viv. In a book by John Marks entitled "Hall Green and Yardley Wood on old picture postcards" there is the same postcard of Shaftmoor Lane (your second photo) in #1. The caption reads, "Shaftmoor Farm, where Russell and Cateswell Roads are today. Once a home of the Greswolds family, it was...

    Infamous People Associated With Birmingham.

Not sure that I would describe Joseph Chamberlain as "Infamous". He certainly did a lot for Birmingham. See below: Dave. Although not a Brummie by birth, he made the city his adopted home. The son of Unitarian parents, he built a profitable business manufacturing screws in the city but was...
