    BMW Jewellery Quarter/Old pub.

Is the King Edward still there? I recall going there, the best part of 50 years ago, with friends, and remember there was a very, very good young piano-player/singer who had everyone rolling in the aisles with his comic songs. G

    Windows 10

Thanks Lyn, and I couldn't agree more. Computers are now essential to modern life, but I think they ought to be viewed as 'servants' and not 'masters'. When I was at work I spent a total of probably two days a week on my employer-provided computer, writing reports, instructions, request, etc...

    Windows 10

I've still got an ancient employer-provided laptop that's Windows 95, but I can't remember what it was like to use. Tortoise-like, probably, and it's in the bottom drawer of my filing-cabinet and will stay there. The thing with me is that my computer is not the be-all and end-all of my life. I...

    Windows 10

I ran XP for ages after Microsoft ended support, and never had a problem. Incidentally, someone I know who works at a local hospital told me recently that the NHS are still using XP in certain areas. I wonder if this is correct?

    Windows 10

Thanks, OM. Yes, I do use an anti-virus and also scan two or three times a week. Windows 7 is way more than enough for my needs, so I'll carry on using it. I guess like car manufacturers Microsoft are really obliged to continuously update their products in a competitive world. G

    Windows 10

I was slightly miffed to be informed that Microsoft will no longer 'support' Windows 7 after January next year. As far as my personal computer requirements are concerned, Windows 7 is more that enough, and I bet I don't use 1% of its capacity. I send and receive e-mails, watch and listen to...

    Down time

It was down last night at about 10.00pm. Windows Updates can be a pain - I don't have them set to 'automatic' as I like to see precisely what they plan to update, as I've had problems in the past. Before I retired, my employer's computer service-manager had Windows Updates permanently turned off...

    Teeth out at the clinic

I too well remember walking 'The Green Mile' up Whitehead Road with Mom. As far as I recall, the dental staff were all women, the worst being a very stout 'lady' with bright red curly hair, and a surgical overall that went down to her feet. She was frightful, and very rough, and would shout at...

    Engineering Sayings

I was actually trained as an industrial chemist, but in the course of my work had to visit lots of engineering companies, and especially foundries in the Black Country, where I heard the following said: 1) "Goo on, gie it a cog-ayver!" Meaning, hit something very hard with a lump-ommer. What a...

    Unity Works, Vittoria St

I worked in the foundry supply industry for a long time, and when in the 1980's UK foundries began closing at an ever-increasing rate, much of their equipment found new homes in countries like India and Indonesia. But this was mostly working equipment, unlike the gear in the photos of the Unity...

    Unity Works, Vittoria St

I just looked at mikejee's photos - there's something almost magnetic about scenes of industrial dereliction. Thanks for these, Mike. In instances where a derelict factory is acquired for conversion into flats, etc., where would all the abandoned equipment, such as the presses and dies in the...

    Gino's Italian Restaurant

I never realised there were four Gino's! We went to the Queensway one several times, and the Belvedere once, if I remember correctly. My mother loathed the 'Birmingham Shopping Centre', hence our one and only visit to the Belvedere. I still have a memory of my old man trying to eat spaghetti..... G

    EARP families.

I worked with a Graham Earp at Triplex Safety Glass in Kings Norton in the late 1960's. I don't know which part of Birmingham he came from. Hope this helps. G

    Gino's Italian Restaurant

No, sorry. I made a search of the net but came up with nothing. I'm sure that someone, somewhere has a photo of Gino's.... G

    Soho Road Handsworth

Thanks for this, Two. You could well be correct about the location - near to where Soho Rd becomes Holyhead Rd. The reason I ask is that the other evening we were reminiscing, and I was reminded that someone I knew years ago bought a new Moskvich van from that place. I think it cost £399! He'd...

    Soho Road Handsworth

Can anyone please tell me if there was a Moskvich car dealers on Soho Road? I'm told it was in the vicinity of the Town Hall, but on the other side of the road. Thanks in advance. G

    Stockland Green

I remember the Stockland Pub very well, as I had a girl-friend who lived locally and we'd go there for a drink on Saturday afternoons sometimes. We also went to the Stockland Green cinema opposite - I'd like to say that we never saw much of the films that were on, but we were both very well...

Does the name Robert Jordan mean anything to anyone who worked at Kalamazoo? G

    Kynoch's I M I 1950s Onwards

My mother's father, William Diaper of Bevington Road, Aston, was an engine-driver at Kynoch, for many years I believe. He'd have retired in the early 1950's. Unfortunately, I can't give any further information, as he never talked much about his job; or anything else, to be honest! G

    Birchfield Road Perry Barr

Thanks, Willey. Don't know how I could have forgotten, as I was in there just about every weekend. G
