Well Remembered, Play, Film, Tv And Other Lines.

Smudger, that quote isn't from "Casablanca", it's from "To Have And Have Not", Humphrey Bogart to Lauren Bacall. The most famous 'quote' from "Casablanca" was never actually said: "Play it again, Sam", was the title of a film by Woody Allen. A great "Casablanca" quote is "Louis, I think this is...

Rag And Bone Man Ragman Tatters

We lived on The Broadway, Witton, and had a rag-and-bone cart most weeks. There were two of them, an older chap who never spoke and who my mother said had been gassed in the war (that is, the First World War) and a younger man who may or may not have been the older man's son. Sometimes they had...

    Famous catch phrases.

That was an entertainer called Robert Morton who was indeed on "Educating Archie". He read quite stylish and often very funny ditties from his "Bumper Fun Book" - I've actually done a couple of them myself (quite a few are on the net) at music clubs when I (and the audience) got fed up with my...

    Brookvale Park & Witton Lakes

Wow! These photos are superb, and bring back many, many memories of when I was a nipper. My dad loved the rowing-boats, and we'd head for Brookvale Park most Sunday afternoons if he had nowt else on, weather permitting. He would never let me have a go, though! Years later I knew someone who...

Apologies if this has already been posted: Arthur Mullard - "Yus my dear!" G

    Famous catch phrases.

Ah, well, now Kenneth Williams was genuinely funny, if perhaps an acquired taste for some. I well remember that my dad listened regularly to 'Round The Horne', without really grasping the true meaning of the Kenneth Williams and Hugh Paddick characters Julian and Sandy. For its day, writing...

    Famous catch phrases.

Only the other week the teenage son of a friend of mine came out with "Aye, aye! That's yer lot!", the catchphrase of another duff comic from the post-war years called Jimmy Wheeler. He was mostly on the wireless, as I remember. When I asked the lad where he got that from, he said his grand-dad...

    The Clements

Lyn, I misunderstood one of the earlier posts and assumed The Clements had gone. Thanks for the correction! G

    Famous catch phrases.

If there was one so-called 'comedian' I could not stick it was Arthur Askey.....my dad thought he was fantastic, and there was always a row in our house when Askey came on the box and there was a scramble to leave the room, as my mother and brother couldn't stand him either. G

    The Clements

A few of used The Clements in the early 1970's, usually on weekends. I thought it was a good pub, well-run, with a few real 'characters' amongst the clientele. There was a bloke who sometimes dropped in and played the concertina. I didn't know it no longer exists. G

    Restaurants In Birmingham 1960s

La Reserve is, I believe, now known as The Miller And Carter. I haven't been there for years and years, but back in 1964 my parents had their 25th anniversary dinner there, and very good it was too. I think it's changed hands (and names) many times during the intervening years, never a good sign...

    H P Sauce Factory

I may have mentioned this before on another thread, but I once applied for a job in Quality Control at HP Sauce Ltd, Aston Cross. I turned up for the interview and was shown around the place by a strange little man with greased-down hair and a squeaky voice who looked a lot like George Formby...

    Soho Road Handsworth

My wife worked at Dudley's Furnishings on Soho Road in the late 1960's, and she says she doesn't recall a furniture shop called Cooke's in the vicinity. There's a Cookes Furniture in Goosemoor Lane, Erdington, if that's any help. G

    Restaurants In Birmingham 1960s

Grea, your description of the place tallies with my fading memory of it, but the name doesn't set any bells clanging. As I said, I only went there once. Is it still there, would you know? G

Crown And Cushion Pubs Perry Barr

Must have been early 1966 when I saw John Mayall at the C&C, as I just checked and found that Clapton finally left Mayall in mid-1966. I do remember seeing one or two local bands at the C&C, but can't remember names now. All a very long time ago.....scary, actually. G

Crown And Cushion Pubs Perry Barr

I'd say it was around 1967/68 when I saw him at the C&C. He played a couple of numbers, started a third then stopped to ask people not to dance. It surprised me. I know Mayall used to regularly 'sack' band members for over-doing the booze, not turning up for rehearsal, etc. IIRC Clapton...

Crown And Cushion Pubs Perry Barr

The Bluesbreakers was a surprising choice for a Sunday night band at the C&C. John Mayall was a deadly serious blues musician, playing music he felt should be listened to, not danced to. I was heavily into blues at the time, and still am, but my sympathy was with the people who wanted to dance...

    Restaurants In Birmingham 1960s

Hi Alan, try as I might I just cannot remember what that restaurant was called...it was a long, long time ago. I don't think it lasted for very long, either. There were always plenty of Asian restaurants along The Horsefair and Bristol Street, the Shah Bagh (usually referred to slightly...

Crown And Cushion Pubs Perry Barr

Alan and Lyn, prior to its being The University Of Central England it was North Birmingham Polytechnic, but in smaller premises than today. Quite correct, Lyn, the school that was on the site was Birchfield Boys Secondary Modern, which IIRC was demolished about the time the underpass/flyover...
