    Computer help

Hi OM, I tried your link per Post No 39, and after a while I got a box telling me that three 'problems' had been identified and fixed. Progress! The next step was to run 'checking for updates', and it's still doing this after more than 12 hours! I'll leave it going overnight, but I have my...

    Aston Hall

Regarding the damage inflicted upon the Hall during the Civil War, the balustrade of the grand staircase does have some damage to it supposedly caused by cannon shot. I think this is highly likely, as the Parliamentarians did lay siege to the Hall, not sure of the date. When I was a boy it was...

    Beggars Bush Inn

Hi OM, very interested to see the photos of the Princess Alice, and also reference to car boot sales. I have (very) vague memories of going to the Orphanage when very young, taken there by my mother at Christmas, but I'm blowed if I can remember why. Regarding car boot sales, my wife and I did...

    Computer help

Hi chaps, I tried your suggestions but no go - computer still won't update. It's doubtless all down to my general uselessness with computers, even though I've been using them for 30 years. Will try again later. Otherwise I'll have a word with my teccy friend when he's back from holiday. Thanks...

    Milk

One of the small corner-shops my mother sometimes used lost its registration to sell milk. Don't know why. It didn't bother me, as I always disliked milk and was in fact allergic to 'sterra', even in coffee. Another 'float' is the carnival type. G

    Computer help

I have a problem which I hope you clever computer people can sort out. I'm on Windows 7, Google Chrome. For reasons I don't understand my computer no longer downloads and installs Windows update. I've tried the various available 'fixes' and suggestions, but to no avail. So if anyone can point me...

    Polish Community Life in Birmingham

In the 1960's I had a good friend who was Polish. His family lived in Witton and were always welcoming and generous - sometimes too generous, especially with vodka. On one occasion I was taken to the Club Polski on Soho Road.....ooohhh my Gawd! How I got home that night I'll never know, and...

    Greyhound, Court Lane

Lady P, don't think my old Moggie (which was called Rupert....) even had a front screen demister. In the winter it took me a long time to scrape the ice off the inside of the windows while the engine warmed up. But I went all over the place in that little old banger! Re: mild - funnily enough...

    Greyhound, Court Lane

I've just found this thread. I used The Greyhound way back, usually on a Thursday evening for no reason I can remember. At the time (1967) I'd just passed my driving-test and was looking for a car to buy. It so happened one of the blokes (student type) in The Greyhound had a 1952 Morris Minor he...

    Longbridge Factory

I'm afraid that my experiences with Longbridge, and its products, are not good. Years ago I had a 1960 Mini and a 1964 A40 Farina, and they both just rotted away before my very eyes. Mechanically OK, bodywise rubbish. When I came back from the USA in 1980 my company graciously gave me a brand...

The vessel with the pestle has the pellet with the poison And the flagon with the dragon has the brew that is true That was recited by Danny Kaye and I think the film was "The Court Jester". Never did care for him very much to be honest. G

Lady P, that was Arthur Howard. Smudger, I know that line but blowed if I can remember where it comes from. G
