    Horace Strawbridge Memorial Details Wanted.

I notice that whoever did the entry for Horace thought "RFA" stood for Royal Fleet Auxiliary.

    Birmingham buses

I can only say that I was told that the bus was celebrating VJ Day. (Why would they cut down a "double decker" for the occasion ?). Like so many people of my vintage, (I was born '41), my brain is cluttered with early memories of WW2.

    Birmingham buses

That looks like the bus I have in infant memory. My Dad took me up to the Maypole terminus to see a bus, just like that one, covered in fairy lights. I was told it was decked out to celebrate V J Day. I can still see the driver, smiling at me. I must've been 3 years old.

ROY GUTTERIDGE & Kate 777 OK, I'll get on it. As a matter of interest, "A. Scamp", on the team list went on to become Sir "Jack" Scamp.

Memories : Essence Of The 50s And 60s

There was an electric train set in our house, like the above, our Dad used to hold the bare wires in the socket with matchsticks. Left to our own devices, my kid brother & me tried to play with the train one day. Not being able to find matchsticks we used hairgrips to hold the wires in place. My...

    Air raid shelters

Sticking my neck out here, but I have to ask ! That right hand shelter, on the roof, wearing a respirator. Is it a stuffed toy or a very tolerant dog ?

    Origins of the Brummie accent

My God, Smudger, did this staff car have Front Four steering ? Was it pink in colour ? Was "My Lady"'s Christian name Penelope ? Is your real name Parker ? Thunderbirds are Go !

    Origins of the Brummie accent

It's "Mum" in this part of Cheshire too. Funnily enough, when I was in the Army I was told the correct way to address the Queen, (just in case, like!). You were to start off by saying "Your Majesty" and from then on you called her "Mum". I wonder what Prince Wagga calls her ?

    Birmingham Anglers' Association

Last time I went fishing with my Dad was in a lake at Hewell Grange which was a Correction Centre for wayward youths. (Was this BAA waters ?) I remember sitting, freezing, and listening to the Drill Pigs, behind the wall, yelling at the inmates.

    One Off Austin Healey 3000

You're right Jim, I was told that the workforce didn't like the J-H at all and it showed in the poor quality of the car. No, it was the 3000, perhaps later models, that I was told Jensen's did work on.

    One Off Austin Healey 3000

Have I got it wrong or did Jensen Motors have something to do with the production of the Healy 3000 ? It sticks in my mind that my Dad had something to do with the car when he worked there.

    Fleur-de-Lys pies

I loved the Chicken&Mushroom pies back in the day, they had their own special taste. Fleur de Lis pies developed into quite a craze I recall, they seemed to sell them all over the place, a shop opened in Town selling them exclusively. Sadly, I can't remember where.

Growing Up In Brum - Roy Blakey Inspired.

Don't think it's cable Smudge, it's a cobweb. Maggie spends all day watching the telly instead of doing the dusting.

    Birmingham buses

The Matador was an Artillery tractor during the war and in the late 50s, in my Regiment there were few of them still in use as ammunition trucks, the 5.5in Medium guns by then being towed by Leyland (Martians?).

Jarrett Rainsford & Laughton Wave Grip Makers

Thanks for that mate, things have changed noticeably since the days when I hung around there with my pals, (1950s !) I'm surprised the old E57 is still going.
