    Remembrance Day 2010

I spent two periods as Standard Bearer for a locai RBL branch, starting in 1982. I still turn up for the Service of Remembrance and I never cease to be moved by the size of the crowd attending. There are more of them now than there were back in the 80s. There's no danger of the The Fallen being...

Williams Clive Private 57334 1/8 Royal Warwickshire Regiment

While it's clear that the photo is not of 1/8 RWR, the Warwicks' cap badge is very much in evidence. I find it fascinating, identifying the various regiments. There are even two men from the Bedfordshire Yeomanry there, which really surprised me.

Williams Clive Private 57334 1/8 Royal Warwickshire Regiment

Sorry Folks, I hate to be a wet blanket but there's a hell of a mixture of cap badges in this photo. Without doing my homework I'm wondering if this is, in fact, a picture of a Machine Gun course. (Possibly Divisional).

    Our childhood toys

Coventry ain't the only one, mate. In nearby Crewe, not only do they have a Crewe Road but they have a Crewe Street as well !

    Birmingham Cinemas

The Maypole cinema, 1937 - 1961. Many happy Picture Club memories.

    School trips from Brum.

I can only remember going on two school trips, these were from Wheelers Lane in the 50s. We did a tour around Cadbury's, I recall and also a trip to Liverpool/New Brighton. I still hold the rapt attention of Scousers when I tell them that I once saw the Overhead Railway when it was still in use...

    Memorial found in a skip

Got it now. The palm frond signifies victory over death. (Good old Google !)

    Memorial found in a skip

I wonder if the feather you saw was, in fact, a palm leaf ? A number of headstones and War memorials I've seen do feature palm leaves, (but I can't remember what they signify).

    What did you wear?

Following the trend, in the mid-50s, my mate & I both had duffel coats, Pete's was Navy Blue, mine was a sort of khaki colour, with wooden toggle fasteners. I was so jealous of Pete's, the hood fitted closely to his head whereas mine was loose and flapped about. It turned out that mine was ex-...

And you thought spiders were scary

We get a large spider that runs across our living room carpet at night, it seems to be an Autumn event. I don't mind the spiders, they seem to keep down other vermin, (We ain't had a double glazing salesman for yonks).

    Canal Boats

I've allways understood that you must never call a canal boat a "barge". I thought a barge was rowed, as in The Royal Barge, or The Admiral's Barge . . . .?

    Childhood Memories

I'm pretty sure the Goldcrest or the Firecrest is smaller than the Wren. (Saw a Goldcrest once, very small !)

Use Of A Rather Dated Image

There's no arguing with the vintage of the buildings in the picture but that geezer in the foreground's attire is definitely Poldark, (even Warleggan) !

Use Of A Rather Dated Image

Certainly earlier, I think Mike, judging by the dress of the reclining figure in the foreground. I wonder what the colonnaded building is, right of picture on the horizon?

    Birmingham buses

Blimey, that Matador has come a long way from the Gun Tractor I remember in the 50s !

Memories : Essence Of The 50s And 60s

That picture reminds me so much of Birmingham Co-op, No6 Branch, Moseley Rd, when I worked there in '56.

    Tastes Of The Past

When it comes to Vesta meals, I used to like their version of Paella.

    Alex's Pie Stands

It looks to me like another Vauxhall like the model in full view. Was it the Wyvern ?

    Tastes Of The Past

Faggots & Peas, now you're talking. I don't care what the ingredients are, I love 'em! (Have you increased your Westie pack, Smudge ?)
