    Brummie Ghosts

I've never seen a ghost, as far as I know, but I've had a few funny experiences. The one that rattled me most wasn't in Brum, I'm afraid, but Germany. I was walking back to camp, late one night, and as you often get, when walking a long distance, I was "miles away". Nearing the barracks the road...

    WW1 postcards

I love looking at old photos like these, there's so much of interest in them. I notice in the 2nd group of pics that the group of seven smart men are wearing what looks like the cap badge of the Worcesters. I wonder which regiment the 3rd picture is of, very few of the men are wearing medal...

    Birmingham Tokens

I agree, the pre decimal value of the token would be one and a half pennies, or three 'apence as we used to say. The metal fragment interests me. At first the second two pics seem to show a fragment of a shell from where the driving band was. There's no indication of what size this fragment is...

    Kings Heath High School

I'd never heard of Kings Heath High School during my time at Wheelers Lane School, in the mid-50s. I now remember a place opposite Livingstone Rd, we allways called it "The Private School" but I have no memory of the pupils there, or their uniform.

Memories : Essence Of The 50s And 60s

I had a Singer Vogue estate,(2nd hand), in the early 70s. Lovely looking car but it developed terminal rust around the headlights.

Memories : Essence Of The 50s And 60s

I too remember, in the early 60s, during a day trip down to London, watching the Midland Red's speedo passing 100. (Try telling THAT story to the younger generation !). That was the first time I'd ever been at that speed, on the road.

    The cane at school

(I could've sworn I posted this comment already but I can't see it.) Anyroad, I love this drawing, it's got the style of a Bairnsfather cartoon.

    The cane at school

There was so much corporal punishment at Wheelers Lane school in the 50s that it was promoted to sergeant !

    Radio

My experience of short wave goes back to the days before the army adopted VHF radio. We 19 set signallers used to dread the onset of the night and trying to work through the "Chinese music". We did have the odd conversation with the Scottish trawlermen though. While I'm on, I wittered on happily...

Thanks ! I had a feeling the title was something to do with the location. Kenneth Horne, how could I forget ?

    Radio

I remember, as a nipper, hearing "Much Binding in the Marsh" being sung by Richard Murdoch and somebody else. I think it was a comedy programme. My best radio experience was in 1964, when I was posted from Germany to Colchester. My new regiment was in a camp which had large WW2 wooden buildings...

Yardley Wood Bus Garage 80th Birthday

The garage looks far bigger than I remember it ! I wonder if the full-length mirror, that used to be on the wall near the first door, is still there ? It was a relic from a byegone age, when staff were required to be smart. Painted on the glass was -"Hat on straight ?" "Straps polished ...

The Birmingham Pals in the Great War

Lady P I think you'll find it was as it said, a parade to be issued with new shirts. (The Army DO love their parades !). The men look like they're still wearing their Birmingham Battalions uniform, at the time when they were tranferring to Service Dress.

    Radio

I thought "Sing Something Simple" was just dreary Another show that depressed me, as a child, was one that played Victor Sylvester music for at least an hour. I'm glad we've progressed from that stuff !

THE END OF WW1 WE SALUTE YOU ALL

Small world indeed ! Buffery is an unusual name, I can see how it might've caught your eye.
