An interesting photograph which obviously has a story to tell, looks as though a house has been demolished which probably had an entry to the courtyard behind, perhaps a gas explosion or fire. The amount of new brickwork on the right suggests that the door was in that position.

I think you’ve nailed it Viv, I looked everywhere for images of the interior and you managed to find one. It’s reasonably conclusive given that each window has 5 vertical panes of glass just like the original photograph. I’m convinced now that it was Bingley Hall.

I never noticed this before but it appears that the ceiling is tongue and groove boarding with a reflection of the window as Mike has said.

Hi Jo, welcome to the forum, I have checked Kelly's directories of Birmingham around 1883 but there is no mention of a Coffee House in Thimble Mill Lane. What was your ancestor's name, the shop may be down under a different description.

I'm sorry, I read your opening post incorrectly and thought the house was at the other end of Hall Road, I will find the relevant aerial view for you although the britainfromabove.org website seems to be offline at the moment.

Lyn, I think you posted that the building was still standing and I think this is it. At least 2 houses have disappeared to allow access to the back and also extensions built onto the side and the entrance moved to the side also. Numbering on google is a bit weird.
