    Restaurants In Birmingham 1960s

I can remember two branches of Drucker's, a small one off New Street, and wasn't there a branch in the shopping centre below the station? They used to have very elaborate and alarming-looking cream cakes! I know that it's a different sort of place now.

    Restaurants In Birmingham 1960s

I can only remember a coffee shop on the first floor of Rackhams. Once when I was there, they had ladies modelling clothes, which seemed like something from the 1950s (it was the mid-80s).

    Restaurants In Birmingham 1960s

I often used to go into the Kardomah, Lady P. It was near Rackham's, I think? In the 1980s, cappuccino seemed really exotic!

    Saltley Secondary School

The school archive is here https://www.saltleyschoolarchives.co.uk/ I've only had a quick look - some very good photos.

    Topsy Jane

I'd never heard of this actress untill seeing "The Loneliness of The Long Distance Runner," in which she played the hero's girl friend, on television last night. She had a very sad life...

    When Everyone Wore A Hat...

Of course, climbing the stairs of a tram, you risked someone catching a glimpse of your ankles!!

I'm sure I remember a glass case with a black dress or suit (1950s?) which was near what I think of as the side entrance. It's all different now, but this entrance was round the corner from the main one.

I think the crab ought to have a Facebook page! There is something frightening about large stuffed animals, I think.

Thanks for the photos, ellbrown. I think my dream was based on them and similar...must have blocked the frightening crab out of my mind, alan!!

I love penguins - wish I could remember them. The crab sounds nightmarish. Ages ago I had a dream about a lot of stuffed animals, which was probably based on these buried memories. The dinosaur used to terrify me, even as an adult. The pterodactyl was quite something as well.

I was a few years after you, and quite agree about miss Thompson. To this day I quote her about once a week!

I've got a very vague memory of stuffed animals, but don't remember a crab. Sounds awful!

    Advertising in the past

I wonder what the GP stood for? Anyway, it was superb!

The Victorian Slum 9 Oclock Bb2

I didn't realise that, Mike. He does some rather odd programmes (like the tapeworm one), but I'd assumed he was a GP who'd become a media doctor.

Yes, that was strange. I was also thinking that Michael Mosley, who after all is a doctor, to be commenting on the Victorian diet.

The Victorian Slum 9 Oclock Bb2

The arrival of the Irish brother and sister (who was wearing false eyelashes!!) was interesting. My grandfather and family came over in 1900, and already had relatives in Birmingham who had come over before, so I assume had work to go to. In the programme, the pair arrived with no money at all...

    Greys Department Store

I didn't spend as many hours in Greys as I did in Lewis's, but looking at the photos, wish I'd explored it more. Lewis's always seemed more interesting and organised. Was there a young person's clothes department in Greys called Way In? Or am I thinking of another shop?

The Victorian Slum 9 Oclock Bb2

It was interesting. Did the children really have nothing to eat all day? If so, how safe or ethical was that? The man with the amputated leg was really brave to use a "Victorian" one. And the man who did his back in....

    Clothes & shoes of yesteryear

Braces don't seem popular theses days. Perhaps there's an association with red braces as worn by Yuppies in the 1980s?

    Clothes & shoes of yesteryear

Richie, I think I can remember shoes like that. I had to look up the trousers becasue I hadn't heard of the label, and found this: https://www.soul-source.co.uk/soulforum/topic/44014-fashion-victims/?page=2 Does that sound right? I've seen programmes about Northern Soul, and was very impressed...
