    Lewis's Department Store

I knew that Harrods had a bank, so shouldn't really have been surprised that Lewis's did. Thanks for all the information.

    I didn't know that Lewis's had a bank!

    Lewis's Department Store

My father passed the exam for grammar school (so long ago that I don't know if it was called the 11-plus at that time), but his grandparents who brought him up couldn't afford it. It struck me as very unfair. But who knows...

"Three Salons at the seaside" film

They always had names like that in the past! Hilda had previously had a sweet shop, but must have retrained, and re-opened as a salon.

"Three Salons at the seaside" film

This film from the 1990s about three hair salons in Blackpool is brilliant https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0d2pngh It reminded me of Hilda's salon in Small Heath where I used to be taken as a small girl. Are there any salons like this now, with hairdryers with hoods? Such a friendly...

    Saltley Secondary School

Miss Thompson strikes again. The other day I got a clue in the Guardian quiz entirely thanks to her :) It was to do with a Burns poem.

St Joseph's Hostel / Waterside House

I think I visited the hostel once as part of training for working in another hostel, and by a strange coincidence it came into my head yesterday. I have a vague memory (it was a long time ago) of being shown one of the bedrooms by a nun. I can't throw any light on the question of haunting, though.

    Chelmsley Hospital

I was telling my husband about these two hospitals today (my nephew was born at Marston Green in the 1960s), and found that MG Hospital has a Facebook page, which I couldn't look at as I'm not on FaceBook, but there could be something helpful there. In the late 1970s I went to MG Hospital for a...

    Hot drinks

This has brought a memory to the surface. My mother used to visit our next door neighbour's mother who lived a bus ride away, and in the school holidays I used to go with her. The elderly lady used to give us what I think must have been Camp coffee with a slice of a particular sponge cake with...

Dentistry past and present in Brum

I remember the smell of a rubber mask and gas at a school dental clinic. I wonder if school dental clinics still exist? Can't remember where the clinic was, but there were chairs with cream metal frames and brown canvas seats and backs in the waiting room.
