    Congregational Church, Erdington

I did end up making the trip to Birmingham with my brother last weekend. No go on the Gravestone I'm afraid but surprisingly the St Thomas Association club did have some references to my great grandfather Leon Harry Johnson 1879-1935 on the clubs wall.

    sayings

As a kid I remember Uncles in the family when referring to their parents as "The old man" or "The old lady" although it was always Mom & Dad to their faces. I don't remember my Aunts using these terms either.

    OLD AND NEW PHOTOGRAPHS

Was it actually made from Chestnut wood? When we played football in the back garden in Erdington mom would say "Dont break the pailins!" (which did happen at times.)

    Bull Ring 1960s - 1980s

I remember as newlywed 20 year old's in 1976 standing in the large crowd in front of the crockery stand in the rag market. " I'm not asking £25 or even £15" shouts the salesman as he smacks the tea chest with the edge of a plate. We eventually got our first 35 piece dinner service for £7 ! We...

Thanks Janice, Always good to have as a future reference. As far as being damaged, I suppose a possibility. Or the family had the stone moved elsewhere?

Thanks for this Janice, it was worth a download. There were some Johnson's listed unfortunately not mine.

    Congregational Church, Erdington

Not personally Lyn, a crumbling spine has given me mobility issues. My able bodied kid brother will be visiting later this month, I just need to give him a location ( assuming the gravestone exists at all ).

Just a shame that the piece wasn't a little more about her rather than the men in her life, sign of the times I suppose. I see that St Thomas Association still has a presence on Station Rd. I do know from other newspaper articles the family were heavily involved with the club. My brother will...

My G G Grandparents and at least two of their children were buried in a family grave at the 'Erdington Congregational churchyard' . Googling tells me the church is now called the United reformed Church (Holly Lane) but I don't see evidence of a cemetery or churchyard on google view at that...

    Tyburn Road Factories

My mother lost half of her index finger whilst operating a capstone lathe when fresh out of school around 1948-50. She said it was at the Tomys factory. I have vague recollections of Tomys being on the Tyburn Rd, can anyone confirm?

I sent an email to the AVFCHistory website a few weeks ago pointing them to the relevant places to correct his info. They've replied to me today with his page updated, so fair play to them. https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/player/wilfred-littlewood

    Notable Brummies

I'm not sure how many Olympic gold medallist have been produced in Birmingham over the years, but my G Grandfathers brother is certainly one of them. Victor Johnson born: Aston Manor 10/05/1883 Olympic champion World Champion Holder of three world records An extract from his...

Marriage laws change 27th February 2023

Exactly. It's the ONLY reason the law has been changed. If 'forced marriage' didn't exist the law would not have been changed. Of course that is no comfort to the mature minded couples that had planned to marry before the aged of 18. For the record, my father married at 17 in 1954 and I...
