Civil Defence - Handsworth? Aug 1944

I recall that my Mom was a member of Civil Defence, she was a school meal cook and somehow I think the two were connected. She would go off on exercises "cooking in dustbins". I know I use to think they'll need a big dustbin to get mom in, but it was the cooking that was done in the dustbin. Was...

    GEC WITTON WORKS

Did GEC apprentices have a link to Castle Bromwich hall, maybe a training centre. Memory of going there to discuss a concert in Town Hall to be arranged jointly by the apprentices of a number of companies, never came to anything. Must have been in early 1960's.

    Aston Technical College

Chemistry was all very well, but I did work for a firm that was strong on engineering, so much so that I enrolled on a City and Guilds at Hall Green so I could learn some fundamentals, this was 1965ish

    Snow Hill Station

Looks to me as if the wall could do with an urgent dose of TLC. Back in late 70's had a load of rubble from the old station in the foundations of a bungalow we were building, had many relatives who had worked for GWR and it seemed a lasting memorial.

J.A.Reynolds & Co Ltd Colmore row

https://www.gracesguide.co.uk/J._A._Reynolds_and_Co I think the date was much earlier! Maybe 1889? https://www.hemswell-antiques.com/antiques/clocks-and-scientific-instruments/other-scientific-items/a-fine-magazine-case-of-drawing-instruments-by-j-a-reynolds-and-co-birmingham-1907-113252.html

J.A.Reynolds & Co Ltd Colmore row

Having a "potter" in antique shop this morning and I noticed a telescope with this label in the lid of the box, I read the date to be 1989. Two addresses Colmore Row and Church Lane Aston.

    IN OUR GARDENS 2025

After the above I saw a small blue butterfly so looked it up, what a bag of worms so to speak, I hadn't realised that nearly half of the "blues" that you see are in fact Brown as most female blues are brown.

With the warm, no hot weather there has been a marked increase of butterflies, some I recognise, these include comma, red admiral, cabbage white, peacock, tortoiseshell, humming bird moth, and some brown ones.

    The car

It's almost 65 years to the day since I passed my driving test, for some forty years I worked in motor industry and I have never bought a new car. Trying to remember some landmarks, a week after the test we hired an A40 took it across Exmoor to Woolacombe. On our return bought a Wolseley NF...

    Aston's Cars

Not on theme but just wanted to ask a "car" question. What is an SUV? I know it's a sports utility vehicle but every other car is marketed as an SUV so what features does it have to have? Thanks in advance for your pearls of wisdom!

    Lucas products and services

In the commentary there was a claim that the mini was the World's first front-wheel drive car, there were Citroens quite a few years previous. I think it was true that the mini was the first CV front-wheel drive.

The garage in Tyseley was Gethin's not Gittin's. Well I was only 7 or 8 when I lived there!
