    Record shop favourites in birmingham

Great pics! They've brought back some memories. I recognise most of those, especially the Plastic Factory bag, I spent hours and a lot of money in that shop. I remember Reddingtons had a reputation (not sure if unfairly) for being overpriced and it seemed a bit chaotic and scruffy in there...

    West Bromwich Workhouse

Please could anyone tell me where the workhouse listed on my great grandmothers birth certicate was? Screenshots attached. Would it have been this one? https://www.workhouses.org.uk/WestBromwich/ There's not enough detail on the birth cert to confirm where the workhouse was. The family aren't...

    Ghost signs of Birmingham

Another faded sign on The Station pub in Sutton Coldfield. This one was hidden by vegetation for many years, it's on the side of the pub nearest to the rail way station. I can't read it all, it's an advert for Scotch & Irish whiskies.

James Street, Aston / New Town

Thanks for this, it's particularly interesting as it's highlighted to me the nearby church is called St Pauls. I got the James Street address from my great grandparents wedding certificate which states they got married in St Pauls Church, Aston. I thought that was the church on Witton Lane near...

James Street, Aston / New Town

Thank you everyone for your replies. My great grandparents lived there around 1908 and had long since moved by the time of the dreadful bombing raid.

James Street, Aston / New Town

Hello, Can anyone tell me where James Street was in Aston or New Town as detailed the link below? I can't find it on modern mapping and wondered if it was lost during redelopment in the 1960's. https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205198720 My great grandparents are listed as living...

    385 Brookvale Road, Erdington

Thanks again Terry, can you remember what it was like inside?

    385 Brookvale Road, Erdington

Thanks Pedrocut. My Great Gran was there in 1967 so presumably it was still Witton Hall at that time?

    385 Brookvale Road, Erdington

Thanks Terry, that sounds plausible as my great gran had mental health issues later in life too.

    385 Brookvale Road, Erdington

I wondered if it might be what are now the retirement apartments on the corner of Brookvale Road and George Road? On Old-Maps there's what used to be Witton Hall, labelled "home for the aged and infirm" but the building numbers only appear to go up to 337 before the junction with Marsh Hill.

    385 Brookvale Road, Erdington

Hello, does anyone know what was at 385 Brookvale Road, Erdington in December 1967 as my Great Gran died there and my mum thought she died in a Care Home? Thank you

    73 New Canal Street

I think you're right. She "married" later in life and changed her surname but I can't find any record of the ceremony taking place. I'm starting to doubt she lived at New Canal St and she'd have had 16 and 12 year old sons but I suppose I can't rule it out. My grandfather joined the army in 1935...

Wow that's really interesting thank you for that and for going to so much trouble.

    73 New Canal Street

Thanks for your replies. My great gran was called Rose Pagett and she would've been about 50 in 1930. I've attached the electoral roll. Rose is my most difficult relative to trace. I have her death certificate (which indicates she was born c1880) and the birth certificates of two of her three...

    73 New Canal Street

While searching the electoral rolls for my great gran, I found record of a lady with the same name as her at 73 New Canal Street. Can anyone tell me what was at that address please? What strikes me as odd is that there were 20 or so names listed there and all the names were female. Lodging house...

    WW1 service record advice please

Thanks to Col H and Chris for your replies. Unfortunately I couldn't find my Great Grandfather on the 1918 Absent Voters List for Birmingham, could it be that he'd already been discharged? I'm really stuck!

    WW1 service record advice please

Thanks Alan. My great grandfather survived the war, in fact all we know is he was extremely disturbed by his experiences and suffered shell shock. The medal roll cards I attached are three different HJ Barhams and the difficulty I'm having is that I don't know which one was my great...

    WW1 service record advice please

Hi Colin, Thanks for your reply. My Great Grandfather was named Herbert John Barham and he was born in 1887 in Suffolk, probably in Middleton or Theberton. He became a painter/decorator and we think he lived at 88 Berners St, Nechells in Birmingham in 1912 which might be on his attestation...
