Have found this book. Seems to be on US Amazon only but I may order a copy for myself for Christmas!

    IRISH CENTRE DIGBETH TO CLOSE

Sad news indeed. I have many fond memories of Digbeth Irish Centre and seeing bands from Ireland play there. However, it has to be said, that whatever Digbeth is changing into, there is very little Irish heritage left there. St Anne's church, once a major part of the Irish community has been on...

    Eagle And Tun Pub

Following a couple of pints at the Woodman down the road I dropped into the Eagle and Tun a couple of years ago. This was during a visit back to Birmingham when I decided to revisit few of my old haunts. I used both of these pubs during the mid seventies as I worked nearby. The landlord of the...

    Ken Miles racing driver

Le Mans is a festival as well as a motor race. I have been there a few times, including the legendary 1969 event, as a fifteen year old. Always stayed in a tent. Often got wet and mucky but loved every minute.

    Ken Miles racing driver

I would be very interested in hearing more about a book about Ken Miles. It would great if this contained something about his early life in Birmingham and army service during WW2. I have been interested in motor racing for most of my life and was aware of Ken Miles and his part in the...

    Ken Miles racing driver

I went to see the film 'Le Mans 66' last night. The film is based on the battle between Ford and Ferrari in that particular race. But there is much more to the film than that. It centres around two characters, Carroll Shelby a race car designer and Ken Miles a racing driver and mechanic. Ken...

    Paradise development 2019

A bit of Deja Vu for me looking at these photo. This area looks very much as it appeared in the early 70s when the unmourned Brutalist Central Library was being built. I remember coming back from the Longboat pub on my way to catch a bus home and walking along barricaded walkways through the...

    Shops Owned By Retired Footballers

Harry Parkes the former Villa player and director had a sports shop on Corporation St near the Law Courts. My mate was a Spurs fan and went there to buy a Spurs kit. He didn't have enough money for the shorts, so Harry gave them to him for free.

    Corona Pop Tyseley

My first Saturday job was with Corona Pop in Tysley during 1969/1970. I went out on a lorry delivering bottles of pop door to door around Longbridge and Bartley Green. This was a paid job at a rate of two pounds ten shillings for a nine hour day. Back in that time when a pint of bitter was two...

    Ex Pats and Brummies abroad

I live in Co Mayo on the Atlantic coast of Ireland having retired here in 2017. Beautiful place with very friendly people who happily accept all outsiders. But you have to make an effort to mix, or you will be left alone as privacy is very much respected here. Weather can take a bit getting used...

    Birmingham buses

I believe that JOJ 257 was on the number 28 route. This route always used single deckers.

    Record shop favourites in birmingham

The Diskery when it was in Hurst St. They moved to near the Bristol Rd during the early seventies. Great place for Motown and Soul. Also the record shop in Woolworths at the Bullring was good. We went there to "chat up" the young ladies who worked there and ask them to play Motown records. Also...

Birmingham Nightclubs of the Past - Memories

Apparently the Mackadown had the longest bar in England. I went to school round the corner at Archbishop Williams and went to disco's at the Mackadown for a while in 1970. Great for Soul, Tamla and Reggae. Once saw Roy Wood sitting in the passenger seat of a MK 1 Cortina in the car park. I...

Birmingham Nightclubs of the Past - Memories

Coming from a Birmingham Irish background I often went to the Garryowen from around 1969 to 1973. Brendan Joyce and his doormen knew my uncle and would happily let me and my mates in at any time even though we were teenagers. It was a great place then with no trouble that I ever saw. I moved out...

Birmingham Nightclubs of the Past - Memories

I remember the Dolce Vita on the corner of Hurst Street and Smallbrook Queensway. It was a bit of a supper club that catered for a slightly older crowd but some good acts performed there. I remember seeing Johnny Johnson and the Bandwagon there in 1971.

    Curzon Street Station yard

I worked shifts at the British Rail parcel depot behind the old Curzon street station in the mid 70's. It was within the area that is now cleared for the HS2 station. The people working there were a mix of Bohemian types, students, old sweats and Indians but we all rubbed along very well. There...

    Small Heath

Spot on re the current condition of Small Heath Park. I took my grandson for a nostalgia trip back to Small Heath a few years ago. I hadn't been there for around thirty years. We walked through the park and it was a wasteland. I was saddened to see that the bowling greens had also disappeared...
