Lá Naomh Pádraig sona do chách ó Co Mhaigh Eo. Happy St Patricks day from Co Mayo! All pubs closed here due to Covid 19 and all Parades cancelled so a very quiet St Pat's day.

    Was it the Emerald Club?

The Garryowen didn't open until around 1968/69. Before that the building it was originally housed in (a large nissen hut)was a club called the Iron Curtain.

    IRISH CENTRE DIGBETH TO CLOSE

The Nissen hut club was on Wordsworth Rd just off the Coventry Rd opposite Charles Rd. Does this ring any bells?

    Stechford Area

I have some great memories of Stechford. First one is the swimming baths and being taken there from school in an open door blue and cream double decker every Wednesday afternoon from Archbishop Williams school Tile Cross in the 1960s. It also became a place to meet our "girlfriends" in the...

    IRISH CENTRE DIGBETH TO CLOSE

It was club called the Iron Curtain before becoming the Garryowen around 1969. Not sure about in the 1950s as a little bit before my time but the building looked like a transplanted WW2 military accommodation building. Would be interesting to discover how it ended up as a club and drinking den...

    IRISH CENTRE DIGBETH TO CLOSE

Similar background to mine and I am also now living in Ireland. I do believe that there is still a semblance of an Irish community in some parts of Brum, including Kings Heath but probably mostly second and third generation now as the generation of 1950s immigrants like my parents die off...

    Archbishop Williams Tile cross 1960 - 64

Do you remember the leaving mass at the spaceship style church when we left just before Easter 1970?. You must have been a year ahead of me, as I don't recall you being in Bernie Hodder leaving class of "no hopers" as I heard one teacher call us. Some of us happily proved him wrong...

    Aston Cross

I Remember this pub very well. Had many a swift half or two after getting off the no 8 bus on my way to watch the Villa in the dark (for Villa) days of late 60s early seventies. Can still smell the mixture of aromas from Ansells brewery and the HP sauce factory as I got off the bus from Small...

    Eagle And Tun Pub

Should watch Paul McCartney's recent surprse gig at this pub on YouTube.

    City Centre pubs

It was the Outrigger before it became the Ship Ashore. Opened around 1968/69 I believe. I went there a lot in 69/70. We always went into the lower bar that was called the Bilge. There were three bars in all over three floors. In the entrance atrium there was a mast complete with sails. One of my...

    Eagle And Tun Pub

HS2 is on balance a good thing for Birmingham and will certainly rejuvenate this part of the city. The issue here is that a pub with a lot of heritage and with an interesting red brick structure could easily have been retained.

    Eagle And Tun Pub

I was back in Brum for a few days at the end of January. Took a walk through Digbeth taking in the Eagle and Tun which by then had been closed down. So sad that this storied pub is going to be demolished. Couldn't Birmingham Council have refused permission and insisted that it be retained...

    City Centre pubs

I also used the Tavern from my first pub going days in 1969 until the awful events of November 1974. Favourite other city centre pubs of this time for me were The Parisien, The Crown on Broad St, The Shakespeare, The Iron Horse, The Outrigger, the Gilded Cage (once saw Trevor Francis in there)...

    City Centre pubs

I was back in Birmingham last week and went to the Craven Arms at 47 Upper Gough St (Near The Mailbox). Here I found my ideal pub. Completely unspoilt and unaltered inside with a stunning tiled exterior. It also had an open fire! Really well kept ale plus free papers and magazines. A friendly...

    Worst car of the 1960's

My first car was a green 1960's Austin A35 van, ex Birmingham City Council, bought for 25 Quid in 1972. A great little runaround, especially when I fitted seats in the back. I believe the really worst cars of all time came along in the 1970's. The Morris Marina and Austin Allegro being two that...

    Birmingham Accents

Definitely not a yamyam if you are from Great Barr! The old boy that I quoted was just taking the mickey as the Great Barrites Brummy accent seemed a little bit 'broader' that our Small Heath version. One thing I recall is that he referred to women as 'wenches', which is, I believe a bit black...

    Birmingham Accents

Something that most non Birmingham people don't realise is that there are or were several different Birmingham accents. Growing up in East Birmingham (Small Heath), I always found that people from other parts of the city and in particular those from North Birmingham sounded different to us east...

    IRISH CENTRE DIGBETH TO CLOSE

I guess that demographics are playing a part here. Many second and third generation Irish people may still have a keen identification with Ireland. However they may not see the need to have a strong involvement with a club that was set up primarily to cater for their parents and grandparents...
