    Stratford Road

Hi Maurice. There were definitely 3 or 4 shops before you reached Bromyard Road. I could see them when I joined the Stratford Road from Sarehole Road. Can't remember what kind of shops they were. They can be seen in the distance in photo 3 of #340 where we are looking towards Bromyard Road and...

    Stratford Road

Hi Ell. I'm assuming that the third photo (second one of the bridge) was taken on the opposite side compared to the first photo and is looking towards Shaftmoor Lane. It seems to show that we are entering Hall Green. I had never heard of Greet Mill meadow but must have gone past there, walking...

King Edwards Grammar School Camp Hill

Thanks for the video. Tantalising glimpses of some of the masters. I left in July 1961 but recognise quite a few of them. Unveiling of the plaque to Tom Rogers, a previous headmaster, was very interesting. There was a clip of a Founders Day Service on October 12th 1962. I thought all the pupils...

    Forward Statue

I took this photo of the Forward statue in 2000. The red paint, presumably representing blood, is probably sending the message that the people of Birmingham shed blood while toiling to progress the advance of Birmingham as a manufacturing city. Like others have remarked, it does seem similar to...

    The Girl From Guildford Street

Hi Gina. Hope you are recovering from what must be a scary experience. Best wishes. Dave.

    Stratford Road

Thanks for all your help. First photo was definitely on the Stratford Road and it looks as if the second one was as well. I left Birmingham in 1967 but have been back fairly frequently. Found these photos when I was clearing out a cupboard. They were taken in 1987. I lived near the Stratford...

    Stratford Road

First photograph conveniently says Stratford Road but I'm not sure of the exact location. Could be Sparkbrook or Sparkhill. It was taken in 1987. The second photograph was taken on the same day and shows a run of shops, some of which look in need of repair. Not sure whether this is on the...

    Hall Green

Hall Green Parade in 1987 looking away from town with Cubley Road on the right. Skidmore's the butchers is still there (I remember them from the 1950s and 60s). They have the second set of roller blinds from the left. Next to them and away from us is Paynes shoe repairs, followed by Threshers...

    See Birmingham by Post Card

I thought it said "troubled with your health" as well.

    Hall Green Schools

Definitely City of Birmingham Education Committee. I have letters from Mr. E. L. Russell in the early 1960s. Not him however in 1931-2 when Pitmaston School was built. The nearest I could find was Mr. P.D. Innes, Chief Education Officer in 1938.

    Hall Green Dog Track

Can't be all that far from York Road school (now Yorkmead) which I attended 1948-1954.

    Ex Pats and Brummies abroad

I have only been to Greece once. That was in May 1979 to Corfu. I remember being over there when we heard that Margaret Thatcher had just become Prime Minister. We always said we would go back to Greece but did not. Our most visited overseas holiday place is North Italy, especially the Italian...

    Learning to ride a bike

This is relevant to OldBrit and his youthful looks. Article in The Times today on how to reduce your biological age. One suggestion is to take up cycling; "Research published by Kings College London and the University of Birmingham discovered how a lifetime of regular cycling helped to sustain...

    Commonwealth Games, Birmingham 2022

Birmingham was featured on BBC Breakfast this morning with the unveiling of the countdown clock to the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The ceremony took place in Centenary Square, just in front of the Library. https://www.sportindustry.biz/news/birmingham-2022-unveil-longines-major-new-partner

    Learning to ride a bike

All this fuss about waterproofs and clothing slowing you down while cycling. There is an alternative as seen on this charity ride in London. Might be a bit chilly in the Colorado winters.

    Cycling in Birmingham QUIZ

The women's clothes look Edwardian so I'm going to suggest 1905 for the year.

Seeking information about a tram accident - 1941

Hi Mike. Would be interested to know whether the accident you found was of similar type to the one requested, i.e. somebody being knocked down by a tram in the blackout. Might be of general interest to other Forum members. Thanks. Dave.

Coaching Inns in the 19th century

Posted elsewhere but this is a painting and explanation of the Tally-Ho London to Birmingham stagecoach. The destination in Birmingham was The Swan.

    Hudson Cycle

I was in a cycle shop in Mickleham, Surrey today and saw a New Hudson, Ladyback tandem, dated at around 1934. It was made at St. Georges Works, Birmingham. Got a fairly good photo of the badge but not so good of the bike itself as it was in a corner next to a wall. The bike could be bought for...

    Ex Pats and Brummies abroad

Sometimes even the best English speakers from foreign lands get caught out. The company I worked for had an evening conference where a Swiss chap gave a presentation of his recent research. He started by saying "Good night ladies and gentlemen". We would of course might have started with "Good...
