    1920s Motor Cars.

Not sure of the actual vintage of these four Austin cars standing in a row in Cobham, Surrey, yesterday. Dave.

    Tolkien's Birmingham

A film on the eventful early life of JRR Tolkien is to be released in the UK on May 3rd. The film called "Tolkien" features his schooldays and experiences during the first world war. I don't know whether there will be any shots of Birmingham. Dave. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3361792/

    Georgian Birmingham buildings

Hi Graham. The restaurant "Simpsons", 20 Highfield Road, Edgbaston, is said to be situated on the Calthorpe Estate in a beautiful Georgian Grade 2 listed building. https://visitbirmingham.com/where-to-stay/simpsons-restaurant-with-rooms-p204541

    Hall Green Schools

That is absolutely amazing. Only 65 years ago since we left York Road School. Some of the names I remember are Liz Carr, Lynn Bunch, Christine Gatty, Doreen Swain, John Skinner, Rob Austin and Roderick King. I think if we want to chat about our lives since we left school then perhaps we should...

    Hall Green Schools

Looks as if it would have been 1954, same time as me, as Elizabeth Caxx also left then. I also went onto Camp Hill and was there from 1954 to 1961. Looks as if our paths crossed quite a bit. Dave.

    Hall Green Schools

Hello Elf9. Wonderful photograph at the school play. Can I just confirm that you left in 1954, which is when I left. The only girl that I know who left then and went to Camp Hill, was named Elizabeth. Thought I recognised a Angela and a Lynn who are 3rd and 4th from the right in the back row...

    Electric motor assisted Bicycles (E-bikes)

E-bikes probably give fewer health benefits than traditional bikes but it must depend on how often you have to use the pedal-assist facility. Still better than having to hang up your cycle clips altogether because you can't manage the hills. Dave

    Electric motor assisted Bicycles (E-bikes)

E-bicycles seem to be growing in popularity, especially on the Continent. I have seen a few around here in Surrey, where it is quite hilly, but not very many. My question is: with the tradition of bicycle manufacturing in Birmingham, does anybody know of a B'ham producer of e-bikes? Many e-bikes...

    Steam Locos

Reported yesterday that steam locomotive "Clun Castle" is back on the move after a major refit. Dave. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-47832176

    Hall Green Library

I guess it depends on your starting point. Google maps says that the distance between Sarehole Mill and Sparkhill Library is 1.5 miles or 27 mins walk, whereas Sarehole Mill to Acocks Green Library is 2 miles or 37 mins walk. Not all that much difference.

    Hall Green Library

I don't think there was one before 1962. I lived in Sarehole Road and my nearest library in the 1950s was the Sparkhill Public Library.

    Photos of Birmingham 2019

This photograph was inspired by Mikejee's observation, #41, of the number of vertical items reaching to the sky. Taken from Cherry Street looking towards the Cathedral. Dave.

Chap playing outside the corner of the Council House. Victoria Square can just be seen on the right. I did put some money into his box. Dave.

    Photos of Birmingham 2019

This photograph was taken yesterday in Cherry Street, near the House of Fraser. Hope brings it brings a smile to you but if it doesn't then you will know who you can go and see. Dave.

    Notable Brummies

Sad to report that Professor Lord Bhattacharyya (see posts 36 and 37) died on 1st March 2019 aged 78. He lived in Moseley and had many Birmingham connections, particularly with the University of Birmingham and Lucas Industries. He was founder of the Warwick Manufacturing Group which encouraged...

    Shaftmoor Lane

A big claim to fame for Shaftmoor Lane is that (according to Wikipedia) it is the birthplace of Robert Norman Davis on 14th March 1945. Not sure which actual house this would be but it is at the Acocks Green end. He is of course better known as Jasper Carrott. A great comedian who I saw a few...

Dentistry past and present in Brum

I find that the dentist I have now, in Surrey, will always start with feeling the neck for any lumps or bumps that could have the potential for being cancerous. An examination is also made of the mouth, tongue and gums before he even starts on the teeth. I don't know whether this routine is...

I thought the "Head of Man" sculpture looked very much like Shimon Peres, a former President of Israel. Dave.

    Felicity Jones (Actress)

Birmingham-born Felicity Jones is starring in a newly-released film called "On the Basis of Sex". The film is a biopic of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and how she, as a woman in a man's world, became to be a Justice of the Supreme Court of the USA. I intend to go and see it when it arrives locally. A...
