    Midland Red Early Days

Returning to Tamworth, a company not mentioned was Midland General. This Balfour Beattie company started out in 1920 as the General Omnibus Co., later buying out the Midland Bus Co. of Kimberley, Notts and renaming to Midland General. What we are taking as red in Astonite's photo may be blue...

Bit unlikely if it's Tamworth but the word across the back of the bus looks to me like GENERAL but there again the location reminds me of Bridgenorth!.

    Midland Red Early Days

After a Midland Red in Black & White territory, here from an earlier time is a Black & White in Midland Red territory at Hereford on a commercial post card view.

    Midland Red Early Days

Midland Reds were certainly no strangers to St Margaret's. I spent many an hour there passing through or laying over. Here we see C5 4828 back in 1961 in pole position for quick getaway to Birmingham. In his white cowgown Driver Ernie Webb of Stratford-upon-Avon Garage will be in charge.

    Midland Red Early Days

The opening of the Severn Bridge spelt the end of the great St Margaret's Coach Station at Cheltenham. Gone was the need for overland connections to south and mid Wales from Cheltenham. Following closure of the station the network then relied on Birmingham's Digbeth as the replacement...

Thanks John., I can't remember what I did yesterday but longer term memory is still working quite well! The photos help remind me as I go along, I only wish I had taken more as recent visits see so much changed over there since 1993. Thank you too Thylacine, every tram seat is indeed fitted...

Thanks for info chaps. My photo was from a book and the caption simply said 'somewhere in France' but would think around if not the same location as the excellent colour photo.

A West Midlands Travel 1993 Adventure

Our planned outing up the Jested mountain fell on the day Ian was leaving us to return home to the UK. Here is our last look [1] at his fine Routemaster, parked outside the hotel whilst luggage was brought out. The local chap writing down bus times was oblivious to the foreign bus when it pulled...

Floris actually transferred from Digbeth to Moseley Road in the PTE takeover, so must have then transferred to Sutton Coldfield Garage at a later date. Of Midland Red interest was the main cover picture of the August edition of the superb nostagia magazine "Best of British".

    Wooden Roads

Corporation Street had them and as far as I know are still under the surface at New Street end, having been asphalted over in the early to mid 1960's. Sometimes they were uncovered as the new surface wore through, usually during the winter months, but were soon covered over and now have several...

    Birmingham Steam Buses 1824-1910.

Oh dear, well here goes - as we haven't had an actual steam bus on for a while, this picture of one was for sale on ebay recently. Makes a change to see one in colour and gives a good impression of how a Midland Red version might have looked. (Cue Lloyd to make livery changes to suit.)

    Birmingham Steam Buses 1824-1910.

I had no wish to upset the proverbial steam hauled apple cart but would hate to see all the efforts and good results achieved on this elite thread go blasting up the funnel if the mods decided throw cold water in the firebox to stop our wanderings. Perhaps I am being over cautious and should...

    Birmingham Steam Buses 1824-1910.

What a whimsical fellow you are Moleworth, almost as whimsical as this solution to London (and possibly Birmingham's) traffic problems. Possibly the tug cable system was powered by steam?

Still in Jelenia Gora Bus Station and more buses to see. The next Berliet derived Jelcz (1)is looking decidedly lopsided compared to it's smart Skoda derived Jelcz stablemate behind on the right. In (2) we see a dusty interurban (Skoda derived) Jelcz waiting to depart to Wroclaw. Behind it...
