A West Midlands Travel 1993 Adventure

POST SCRIPT I have managed to dig out a banknote I saved as souvenir and also a card type ticket issued on the Jested Cable Car (operated as you may remember by the Czech State Railways). The fare had obviously recently gone up from 20 to 30 Koruns for the return journey, still very cheap by...

    bedford dupal

I drove a Bedford VAL/Duple a couple of times for Connaught Coaches of Chadwick End in the 1960's. The steering was all over the place and the Leyland engine was addicted to Easystart fluid for the first startup of the day. It wouldn't start without some even on a hot Summer morning.

    Refuse Collecting Vehicles

Re: Refuge Collecting Vehicles How about this solid tyred six wheel electric beauty ordered to their own specification by Birmingham Corporation in 1930. It was built in Hay Mills by the General Vehicle Co. Ltd. who marketed a range of battery electric lorries as the 'GV ELECTRIC'. Note the...

A West Midlands Travel 1993 Adventure

Again my thanks to everyone who stayed with this thread all the way through, and input to it. David, after seeing so many Tatra T3 tramcars in the Czech towns it is interesting to see the facelifted cars still in use today in Leipzig. The collapse of the Communist bloc countries sadly brought...

A West Midlands Travel 1993 Adventure

Many thanks for your encouraging comments (I wouldn't mind a night in that Leipzig hotel, trams are music to my ears, even through the night!) Looking over from the hotel [1] 3247 can be seen in the bus station. We had been expecting our outcasts in 3247 to join us for breakfast and the use of...

A West Midlands Travel 1993 Adventure

Thanks Thylacine. The Hotel Josefshaus [1] provided us with good food, drink and a sound nights sleep and by luck when the keys were handed out I had a third floor room with a balcony that seemed more Swiss than German. After breakfast we decided to have a walk into the town before setting off...

A West Midlands Travel 1993 Adventure

Sorry for interlude but have had some holidays including another week in the Czech Republic. (should have put on a short black and white film of someone working at a potters wheel accompanied by light music). So departure for home day had arrived. Alarm calls were not needed as work on tramtrack...

    Gramophone Records

First record I ever remember hearing was Glenn Miller's Moonlight Serenade, probably because my Mum kept playing it over and over again when I was about 5!

    Birmingham Trams

Reckon so, Maurice - here is the fixed mesh lifeguard as fitted to 1895 built Bristol trams which may have been the type replaced on the Nottingham cars. Bristol later changed to automatic drop tray but kept a swing back mesh front guard to the end of their trams in 1941.

    Birmingham Trams

Maurice , here is a photo of the first Birmingham Corporation car (Fleet No. 1) of 1904 as delivered by the Electric Railway & Tramway Carriage Works of Preston. It clearly shows the automatic lifeguard equipment in place upon delivery so I think that you could be right that your mother's story...
