    The cane at school

Hi Nickcc101, I was there 1959 to 1963. Not a bad school when you consider that nearly everyone in our class passed the eleven plus and there were over 30 in the class. Anne

    Brummie sayings & language

Thank you Jennyann, I have always wondered where the expression 'he's in his oil tot' came from. Not many people seem to have heard it but my Mom used it regularly. Anne

    School Milk

Alan, We used to have stera in tea and pas for drinking. I visited my Grandad one day and he asked if I would like a glass of milk which I was chuffed about until I started drinking it and it was stera. Yuck!!! I was a polite little girl and managed to drink it all but, never again. On the few...

They Were Caught In Our Old Street Pics...

I remember many of my cousins living and playing in similar conditions 40-50 years later but they have all made a success of their lives. Anne

Sorry Rick, I tried to send you an instant message but it wouldn't let me post it. The thread will soon revert to Hurst Street, I'm sure. Anne

    Hurst Street

Rick, Blackfoot Sue had a hit in the seventies with 'Standing in the Road'. They were our local band at Kingshurst, I went to infants and juniors with one of them and another was my very first boyfriend. Aaaah www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWaJ6vNyvaw‎

    Hurst Street

I went to Garretts Green Tech about 1968 to 1970 to study tech drawing and tracing. Do you remember The Virus later Blackfoot Sue from Kingshurst? I used to catch the 175 bus from Tile Cross to The Radleys to catch the bus to school at Coleshill about 1966-1967. Mainly because a lad I fancied...

    Hurst Street

Hi Rick, I had a boyfriend in the late 60's early 70's who was an artist, he worked above the music shop and it was him that painted the Wasp. A lot of people objected and said it was an eyesore but I loved it. He took me to Ozzy Osbourne's house one day as he was asked to paint a submarine on...

    Items that have faded away

I found something on a New Zealand forum which said Green Goddess was also a wine aperitif in the 50's which was sold in a glass woman shaped bottle. I don't remember it but I was a bit young then.

That's why I use Tesco internet shopping. Would cost me more in petrol and the driver brings it in to my kitchen and puts it on the table. Go Tesco!!!!

Rosie, as one of five I was always lying on the floor. My Dad had the pouffe for his feet. Every few years he would get the old singer sewing machine out and re-cover it. Anne

    The Sales.

I'm with you there Alberta. I HATE shopping especially sales. I'm afraid that if I can't buy on the net I do without. I occasionally go in to Alcester as it is an old fashioned High Street but can't remember the last time I went to 'town'. I used to go every week when we lived at Kingshurst to...

I can't stand wooden lollipop sticks. Just seeing someone licking one puts my teeth on edge, and if the bite, goodness me. Merry Christmas to everyone. Anne xxx

Birmingham Nightclubs of the Past - Memories

Nick, how things have changed, not always for the better. My friends and I got in to a few scrapes, gosh, I remember we used to hitch lifts across Birmingham, how dangerous would that be now? Money was tight, I only earned 4 guineas a week when I started work in 1968, so had to economise when I...

Hi John, As my Uncle was one of eleven and living in squalor in city centre slums, in Sherlock Street, so I think it probably sorted him out and put him on the right track. He turned out OK in the end as did the other ten. All worked and earned their own living, unlike many today! My Mom was...

Birmingham Nightclubs of the Past - Memories

I was there that night, it definitely happened in the casino and a lot of the people I knew were interviewed, as far as I can remember it was, shall we say, a disagreement that got out of hand. Although, I must say a lot of the bouncers back then (not all) enjoyed a bit of fisticuffs. Hope...

Birmingham Nightclubs of the Past - Memories

I remember there was some trouble in the casino at The Rum Runner in about 1971 and someone tragically died. Does anyone remember Tex who was a bouncer at Rebecca's? He was also a gentle giant.

Birmingham Nightclubs of the Past - Memories

I don't remember having a lift home from you Nick. Smudger, I wouldn't dare. We don't know who's reading this. When I think back to the groups that used to play at really small pubs like the Mackadown to quite small audiences and at a reasonable cost, we were very lucky. At Barbarellas I...

Sad, wasn't it? My uncle Fred Dobbins was sent to Borstal for a trivial offence, at a very young age. Later became a prisoner of war, but he was never bitter, bless him.
