Thank you all for all your lovely comments. Dad would have loved it, beware I have two books full. This is quite a poignant one, I grew up knowing the story of Wally Bill, our Dad took us to see wher they carved their initials in Stonebridge and to the Hall of Memory to see his name in the Book...

    The Mighty Maglev re-appears...

Hi Mossy, Do you remember my Dad Albert Bennett? He worked at the Met for 42 years and was finally the night manager. He was made redundant in 1984. I worked in the drawing office when I left school as a tracer but decided it wasn't the job for me and moved on. Anne

    Bubble and squeak

Me too Jean, don't overdo the presentation. Ray has a fantastic appetite so I really enjoy cooking for him. When I watch these cookery programmes I can't believe how much time they spend pfaffing around. Hate cold food, just get it on the plate and eat it! Unless, of course, we have guests, then...

Thank you Pomgolian, he'd be chuffed I'm sharing them with you. My Mom worked at Newtons/GKN in Thimblemill Road and my Gt Grandad died when he fell off Saltley Gasworks where he worked as a steeplejack. We could be related! I also write poetry so when I feel ready, I'll share some too. Anne

Jobs you did after school and Saturdays.

In 1968 I started work at Metro Cammell in Washwood Heath as a trainee tracer and earnt 4 guineas a week. I still have the letter offering me the job. I had to catch two buses to get there and that cost about £1 so there wasn't much left when I paid my keep. Anne

    Bubble and squeak

Hello G G Jean, I just use whatever is left, roast, boiled, new or mash. Anything goes, I also fry mine in butter and find that adds a certain something (probably cholestrol). Funnily enough they serve proper B&S with cumberland sausages, leeks and onion gravy at our local pub. Delicious! I must...

    Bubble and squeak

Hi Astonian, I'm married to a farmer so we tend to buy whole lambs off our neighbour. We breed our own beef and pork so I put anything that looks interesting in my stews.I agree that's where the taste comes from. Have never got to grips with breast of lamb though. You've got me thinking what to...

    Bubble and squeak

My hubby Ray loves preparing the veggies, there are only two of us but you'd think he is feeding a family of ten so I often freeze what's left and use it for a quick bubble and squeak with steak or pork chop. Delicious I agree, especiallly if there are sprouts and leeks in there, a little bit...

When I was young if my Dad felt the need to swear he had his own exclamation of 'Perish me blindin' hooray'. Has anyone heard that before or do you think it was another 'made-up' expression?

Jobs you did after school and Saturdays.

In the mid sixties, when I was 14, I went to work at Hedges Chemists at Lea Village for 15 shillings a day. As well as serving behind the counter, I had to weigh the epsom salts and bicarb on a big set of old brass scales and put it in bags, polish the brass name plate and wrap the...
