    Items that have faded away

I have fond memories of my dad sitting on the back step 'mending' his working boots. If he didn't have time to do the task himself he would leave me a note 'please take my boots to the 'menders', thanks, Dad - which I did after school. I also remember the smell of the Cobbler's shop; the label...

Carol and Judy, I expect you both, like me, had to tackle typing tables - measuring out spaces between the columns, setting the tabs, etc. I graduated to an electric typewriter which had black ribbon spools on each side of the machine. I think it was an IBM a forerunner to my IBM Golfball...

    Items that have faded away

Judy, I had forgotten about the brushes used for cleaning our manual typewriters. Mine were in a pouch in my desk. I still have a round orange coloured typewriter rubber from days of yore.....and accuracy was most important working with several carbon papers between the sheets of paper -...

    Items that have faded away

Bill, There was a company that used to send ladies round to offices and they were from 'Phonatas'. They used to wear a brown uniform. We also had people come to service and clean our typewriters but they were usually men and I don't remember the name of the firm they worked for. Anthea.

Ah Mars bars. I remember when they cost 4d (old money) and they were so big I couldn't manage to eat it all in one go. My Mom used Vim scouring powder going back to the 1940's at least, but our local shop still sell Vim which surprised me. Carolina, yes, Swarfega was (or is) used for cleaning...

    My mate marmite ;

I used to like Marmite as a spread and Bovril as a drink, but haven't had either for years - never seem to think of them now. When I was a kid I used to eat OXO cubes - must have had a salt deficiency ?? Anthea

    Soho College

Annette1960, I remember Miss Bonham but this was when she used to teach at Station Road Secondary Modern School in Harborne. She was young then and used to take us girls for PE and games. When she wasn't doing that she had her own class, but I can't remember the her chosen subjects. She was...

    1950s

Topsy, thanks for sharing those memories of the 50's. A great time; first job, money to spend on those lovely dresses, skirts and petticoats (I had a 23" waist then, not saying what the measurement is now, though!) Got married and later bought a Leisure 80 cooker with eye-level grill which I...

Station Road Secondary Modern School, Harborne.

Hi Sharon, I attended Woodhouse Road J&I School prior to attending Station Road SM School and I had a look at the Woodhouse Rd school registers and found the following: Betty Maureen Mansell b.23.7.1927 and Patricia Jean Mansell b.26.6.1929., also Winifred Mary Onions b.24.12.1924 and Florence...

Does anyone remember Indian Brandy? Does it still exist? I was given a teaspoonful of this mixture when I had stomach ache as a child. I loved the taste of it and sometimes said I had a stomach ache just to get a spoonful.

    Viking aircraft 1951

Eric, thank you I can see the picture now. I used to go to air shows to see the Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricanes. I went to an air display in the 1960's on Billesley Common, Kings Heath where the Harrier Jump Jet arrived and the Vulcan Bomber flew overhead deafening everyone. Anthea

    Various street pics

Stars, Just found these great pictures. Very sad to see the children without shoes. Times were very hard for some. The picture #116 is fascinating as every available space is taken up with goods like an Aladdins Cave..........

    The Square Old Square

What an interesting picture. I never knew these shelters existed so thanks Lyn for the enlightenment. I was born a couple of years before the war started, so I expect my mom wouldn't travel into town in those days from Harborne, preferring to shop at the local Co-op and on the Flat nearby...
