    Corking

Wendy, thanks for resurrecting faded memories of Corking. My brother who is ten years older than me had a lovely girlfriend who taught me corking, she also brought me home-made toffee apples and other little gifts. I was very dissapointed when my brother didn't marry her. Anthea.

    Brummie Ghosts

Hi Paul, I think it is possible you did your training in Tom Knocker's Wood, although it is was over the other side of the Golf Course. The pub you mention would, I think, have been the Scarlet Pimpernel situated on the corner of Tennal Road and Northfield Lane. Along Northfield Lane was Home...

    Brummie Ghosts

Nick, To the locals the 'wood' was always referred to as Tom Knocker's Wood. On a map dated 1834 of Harborne Village Tom Knocker's Wood is marked. It is, or was, situated on the border of Harborne which, when the Council Estate was built in 1936 became part of Quinton. When the family walked up...

Station Road Secondary Modern School, Harborne.

Is there anyone out there who went to Station Road School in Harborne around 1947 - 1953? I remember Mr Stanton was the Headteacher and Mr Abel was Deputy Head. Also Mr Owen, Miss Bonham, Mrs Heart, Miss Beck and Miss Pallett. Mr Tozer was our music teacher. There were other teachers, but I...

Michael Portillos Great British Railway Journys BBC2 16/20 6.30 pm

I have enjoyed watching this series, and think that Michael Portillo has come across as quite a nice chap - he's polite and I even like his colourful shirts! I was a bit miffed that Paignton wasn't mentioned when the programme came to Torquay as that is where the steam train journey to...

    Clothes & shoes of yesteryear

My husband, an orphan, was issued with boots, socks, etc and also a 'gansey' which was brown, woollen, had long sleeves, a collar and three or four buttons at the neck. This was back in the 1930's and he still refers to his jumpers as 'ganseys'. Anthea.

    Brummie Ghosts

I was born down the road from Tom Knocker's wood which, as Ray Barrett says, was close the the Monarch pub. The wood was next to Harborne Golf Course which the family used to walk across to get to Weoley Castle where my Gran lived. We would make the journey back in complete darkness so it was...

    calling all office girls.

THAT PEN IS NOT MUCH GOOD. PA MAY WE ALL GO TOO? I'm sure everyone will remember these two sentences which became second nature to Pitman students. The sentences represented the vowel sounds in the English language as you all know. At College we also had to read aloud passages from books...

    calling all office girls.

Yes, dek carr, There was a Pitmans College somewhere in Corporation Street. I attended the'New Era' College in the 191 Corporation Street Chambers. It was named 'New Era' because the text books we used had New Era printed on them, so that's where the name originated. I still have my...

    Charles Dickens In Birmingham

I believe there is a room in the Birmingham & Midland Institute which is called/named the Dickens Room. I was there in the 1980's so perhaps things have changed since then. I also think he gave lectures and readings there. Anthea:)

    Self pay?

Good for you Charlie, I would have done the same as you. What a rude shop assistant - whatever happened to 'Customer Care' whatever they call it? I don't think thought is given to elderly or disabled people when introducing these new methods. Morrisons and Tesco have introduced these...

Reg, Have you seen this site www.oldladywood.co.uk ? there are pictures of Garbett Street. My grandmother lived in that street for many years. Visiting as a child I remember walking from Monument Road, down Shakespeare Road to where gran lived at the very end of that road which led to...

    Shoe Repair

There is a cobblers shop here in Paignton. I think its known as a 'shoe repairers' nowadays - sounds posher, I suppose. The shop cuts keys and sells things like - insoles, keyrings, and they will engrave your dog's name onto a disc. I have had my flat walking shoes soled and heeled there, but...

    Shoe Repair

:)My Dad used to repair his working boots. He had a couple of 'lasts' and I used to love to watch while he cut the leather to shape with a very sharp knife. Then he would hammer 'sprigs' all around the edge of the sole, and the same procedure with the heel. Then, I suspect he put a few...

    Webley Gunmakers - information requested

Richard, I didn't realize W&S was demolished in 1958 (the year I married!), so I must have been about 19 years old when I worked there. My personal archives are getting rusty/dusty! :( Tempus Fugit, as they say. Anthea:)

    Webley Gunmakers - information requested

Richard, I must congratulate you on your website and on what you are trying to achieve in saving this historical data. I don't remember much about my time at Webley's, but I remember they had a rifle club for employees which I would have joined had I been a permanent employee. However, I...

    Webley Gunmakers - information requested

Richard, I worked at Webley and Scott which I think was in Weaman Street in the latter part of the 1970's. I was a shorthand typist working as a temp and spent a month there. I remember a customer in South Africa required a rifle which was custom made to suit his measurements. All the...
