    Curzon Street Railway Station

Birmingham Grand Central Station was a putative name for New Street but I cannot trace that it was ever used once the station opened.

    George Dixons Grammar School

I think it can depend a lot on the teachers that you encountered in your school life. I remember one teacher in the boys school who reminded us several times that we were in the top 26% of boys in the city as the majority of the school age population did not have the advantage of a grammar...

    Artists Who Painted Birmingham Landscapes

The problem, Eric, is that 'Smudge' or 'Smudger' is, or was, a very common nickname for anyone called Smith especially in the forces. I have found works by a J W Smith Smudge and their works are similar but they are two generations apart in age as well as Smith Smudge being from the North East.

    Elmdon Airport Birmingham International Airport

I remember doing a survey of business travellers at Birmingham Airport in 1970. I think at that time Air Anglia flew from Birmingham to Norwich with an onward connection to Stavanger. It amused me to see the Air Anglia check in operator ask one passenger to stand on the baggage scales as they...

Scams: Telephone, email, texts, other 2021

I had an email yesterday which I deleted immediately. It was a name I did not recognise. It said something to the effect ' I sent you an email recently but got no response. Is this email address still valid'. As I said I deleted it immediately.

    Snow Hill Station

Moor Street station was opened for local trains on the Warwickshire lines to relieve the preasure on the tunnel to Snow Hill. Originally there was no connection between the stations at Snow Hill and Moor Street. The Snow Hill lines ran past Moor Street non stop. Finally when the tunnel reopened...

    Chamberlain family

I don't know if any of these purchases were made while Joe Chamberlain was Colonial Secretary but if they were the news media today would be shouting about conflicts of interest and possible corruption.

    Old street pics..

My question would be: Do they expect to sell all that meat in one day? I can only think that they must be wholesalers as well as retailers.

    Tangye Brothers Engineers

Most new books now are print to order so it looks as if someone is providing a service for old out of copyright books but these will be dependent on the quality of the optical character recognition and whether they have proof read the copy. I have a friend who has just published a book and she...

    Curzon Street Railway Station

I think at one time there was some thought that Birmingham University might take it on but they have got the old Municipal Bank HO now. I do not know what it will be used for but it is being included in the footprint of the HS2 station.

Wacaden Dairy Wathes Cattell & Gurden Dairy

Hi and welcome to the forum. An intersting bottle. There are collectors of glass bottles but I have no idea what this one might be worth. I have come across this in a Google search https://www.milkbottlenews.org.uk/features/passion/munitions.html

Metro Extension to Centenary Square and beyond

Yes the Queen came to 'open' New Street sataion and it was planned that she should get on a tram to open the tram extension. But she had to be driven to Bull Street to see a tram which had been towed there by a truck. Good job she has a sense of humour.

Metro Extension to Centenary Square and beyond

I understand that the fault was a result of the extra weight of the retro fitting of the batteries. However we have known for years that batteries would have to be fitted for Pinfold Street and Victoria Square so this should have been tested out long ago.

Metro Extension to Centenary Square and beyond

Yes the next tram from Bull Street to Library will be ...........October. Even this weekend they have not been coming closer than the St Chad's Stop. https://westmidlandsmetro.com/using-the-metro/service-status/

    Broad Street

There was an entrance to a small hall to Bingley Hall which was on Broad Street which was previously the Prince of Wales Theatre which was bombed during the war. I remember the Dancing Fountains were often displayed in this hall.

    Broad Street

I thought it was but I am not sure whether Bingley Hll was this block or the next. When I was at the College of Commerce, which later became the Registry Office, I remember a Car Dealership called Lyles Garage which I think was next to the Colonade.

    Broad Street

It looks as if it has lost its roof. I am pretty sure that it did have a roof when it was in Broad Street.

Metro Extension to Centenary Square and beyond

It could be because the Metro has been mainly a hidden asset running in railway cuttings and only seen by the public at each end of its route. Until the Metro got onto the city streets there were even people in Birmingham who did not know that we had had trams since 1999.
