    Sutton Coldfield Station

I should have said in my previous post, great photos Mark. I think the station retains an aura of bygone days and, hopefully, it will be left as it is with its redundant features in place for posterity.

    Sutton Coldfield Station

I'm a retired postal worker from Sutton Coldfield delivery office and I have no recollection of mail being dropped off at Sutton Park Station. It was all shunted in off the main line alongside the deck of the Postal Customs depot, unloaded and the train went off into the main line again. The...

    IN OUR GARDEN 2023

I'm surely not the only one chomping at the bit to get some serious gardening underway after a relatively mild winter. All my fence maintenance is done, baskets, chains and containers at the ready and fertiliser in place waiting to be spread. These are the weeks of promise of good gardening...

    Stratford Road

Just along from Palmerston Road and almost opposite Stoney Lane before that junction was re-routed. It was a regular Saturday afternoon haunt for us local teenagers. For a few years all of my pocket money disappeared in their till.

If you could live anywhere in Birmingham, where would it be?

Referring to the title of this thread, how about our current abode? My wife and I and our three grown up children moved into our house in 1992. All three children flew the nest within five years allowing us to adapt our house to our requirements and we have no wish to ever leave. We have...

    Small Heath Park (Victoria Park)

I have a vivid memory of being in Small Heath park in 1956 when news came through that Birmingham City had beaten Sunderland 3-0 in an FA Cup semi final. Pity they couldn't finish the job, losing 3-1 to Manchester City in the final. The park was walking distance from our house in Sparkbrook so...

    Where was your first holiday?

My first holidays were to Barmouth. Besides me there were a brother and sister who are twins. Early 50s and I'm sure our parents had to go without to afford us our annual week away. Anyone who's taken the train to Bamouth from Birmingham will know that it's a lovely journey that only gets...

    Co-op horse

My mom's number was 373754. There were stables in Anderton Road, Sparkbrook which I'm reasonably sure we're for the Co-op horses. They would have been part of, or adjacent to the council yard on the corner of Anderton Road and Montgomery Street.

Midlands Arts Centre (MAC) 60th Anniversary

My wife and I go to many traditional and folk gigs in Birmingham and the MAC provides an intimate venue for such concerts. We were there as recently as October 9th amongst an enthusiastic audience and there's nowhere better on such an occasion. There used to be outdoor summer concerts in "The...

    Sutton Town Station

Wonderful photos Mark. I live less than a mile from that historic station and I'd never given thought to the derelict building on the other side of the track. Being a goods only line there's not much opportunity to explore although I've had a good look at Sutton Park station just further down...

    Sutton Coldfield

The photo sadly shows the damage repairs to the platform caused by the train crash in January 1955.

    Illey Fields Pub

Was it the Merrits Brook at the bottom of the Holloway?

    The Railways

Memories of my youth spent on the Small Heath bridge but the outlook into Birmingham city centre has changed completely. That's a great shot Covroad.

    Acocks Green

Westley Road in the foreground then?

    B'ham Works Amateur Football Association

My best guess is that the Birmingham Works AFA finished around 1980 when there was an exodus of their clubs to Birmingham AFA. I think the office for the Works AFA was on Stratford Road, Hall Green very near to the Rialto cinema. The Birminham AFA has now become the Birmingham Football League.

    fish and chip shops

I worked at the Post Office in Coleshill Street from 1962 until I got moved on in 1964 and well remember Blackpool fish and chip shop on the opposite side of the road by Gaskell and Chambers. It must have been almost directly opposite the Gaiety cinema. The name always intrigued me and still...

    What was the best Generation

Most of the contribution to this thread was 2008-9 and there was already talk of political correctness. Sadly, many of those contributors are no longer with us but the ensuing years have witnessed a major upheaval in what is and isn't acceptable in society. I was born in 1945 and consider my...

    Bromyard Star football club

I played against them in 1970s. They played at Daisy Farm Rec at that time in the South Birmingham Sunday League.

    Metropolitan Cammel sportsground

All in the complex that's Holly Lane Sports and Social Club now. It started off with HP Sauce ground at Grange Road then the Delta Metals pitches right through to the Gas Ground at Woodacre Road. None of those pitches now belong to the original occupants.

    Worst car of the 1960's

I started out driving in 1964 with an Austin A35 followed by an Austin Cambridge and subsequently an Austin A40 Farina. All had rust problems but were reliable mechanically. During my years of driving I've had experiences of most popular makes with differing results but I can only remember...
