    Mcnabs Ice Creammaker Sellers

I used to live almost opposite McNabbs, back in the late 60's - early 70's. I believe Joan Armatrading lived about 100 yards or so away, the other side of the Baths, although I never met her. However, even before that I knew the family as they had a daughter about my age who I must have known...

    The Miles Family

I think in this context the term 'Estate Visitor' could either be what we now refer to as a Housing Visitor or, it could equally be someone employed in the civilian role of the Management/Allocation of Police accomodation, together with responsibility for any maintenance issues or re-decorating...

Looking For Bill Paget And Martin Green Bcp

Wasn't Bill Paget the Inspector on the Driving School, mid 60's?

    Bordesley Green Grammar Technical School

Whilst this thread is current, if anyone remembers Roger Marchant at Bordesley Green Tech during the mid-sixties, he sadly passed away in 2014. He was living in Cleveland, Ohio, and had become a Professor of Biomedical Engineering...

    Bordesley Green Grammar Technical School

Tim. It has to be the same person that was later at Bordesley Green Tech. I can remember the car, and the 'big hammer' on inferior workmanship - including mine.:) I'm still using things that I made under his instruction including an Engineers Clamp and something like a Protractor/Bevel Gauge...

    JOHNSON Sissy Maude - Handsworth

Welcome. Only two and a half years late! But in geneoligical terms, not late at all.

    2 Erdington to Stechford

Photo #34, 4th photo in Post #3. That was looking across the mouth of Stechford Road and the premises with the large Raleigh sign on the end wall became Boyd's TV shop. Next to that was an Ironmonger's shop, and the 3rd, prior to the Winter quarters for [whatever] Fair, was a Cafe called (when...

Princess Elizabeth to meet up with King George V

Thanks for the reminder. Every year I keep saying I'll go to one of their events, and then forget!

    Bridges over the River Cole

Just to clarify. The Cole Hall Lane Bailey Bridge came about following heavy rains in the early 1970's which swept away the original (I seem to remember) rather squat three arch stone bridge.

    Bridges over the River Cole

I don't think it was ever replaced as such. It may have transposed from the original wooden sleeper type roadway to a more substantial road surface, but I don't think it was ever replaced, like for near like. When was Shard End built? Prior to the building of the Estate, I'm not even sure that...

Wem family, 28 Whittall Street, 1920-1925

Thanks Mike. Much appreciated. Thomas Welch Wem (1841-) is shown as a Gun Lock Maker in 1871, Upper Webster Street. Interesting about the Tobacconist bit. 1881 shows Charles (1824-) + family at 64 Phillips Street. No Thomas and I can't find him elsewhere. I need to do more work on that and...

Wem family, 28 Whittall Street, 1920-1925

Thanks. That's the family. The son, George Francis (1888-1915), died fighting at Gallipoli. Seemingly, the father took over the premises from his son. Interesting that they initially had different premises.

Wem family, 28 Whittall Street, 1920-1925

I hope this is the correct forum. I have been researching 'one of mine', Charles Francis WEM (1860-), and have found that although the family home was at 108 Hillaries Road, the Electoral Registers show that he had a Workshop at 28 Whittall Street. Does anyone have access to Trade Directories...

    Which One

GEFF. Why not tell us who you are looking for? If you don't feel comfortable on Commercial sites, why not try your local Library? They will normally have free access and someone to guide you along. Alternatively, check if there are any night school classes on the subject. I realise that you...

    Bridges over the River Cole

Thanks but the 'urge' has long since passed! I quite liked the single lane bridge. Some years ago I was teaching HGV driving in the area and used to use that bridge to reinforce the principal of 'planning ahead'. From the Bromford side, if they got too close to the Stop line in an artic, then...

    Bridges over the River Cole

My memories of the River Cole were more to the East in the Stechford area. The Stechford Lane bridge had (and probably still has) a large diameter pipe that crosses the river to the West of the roadway. It always looked inviting as something to try and walk across. Alas, we moved out of the area...
