    Old street pics..

There are a number of Handsworth photos on that St.Andrews site, Jayell. What you have to do is go via the (tiny) search box half-way down on the left and put in 'Handsworth'. I've not tried it for other areas of Birmingham but 'Birmingham' will only get you those images in Birmingham indexed...

Can I suggest that "Edmund Street" is where "Colmore Row" is, since Colmore Row only went as far as Paradise Street which would be the next on the right, around the bend there..?

    Old street pics..

From this morning's BBC Website feature 'Britain from the Air' here's an indication of how much was lost in the progress of Birmingham being a grand city throughout the whole 1900's century. So much to see here, although the focus is the Hall of Memory (1928 photograph)

    Soho Road Handsworth

Can I have an inspired guess that this photograph is exactly the same spot in 1970? I'm evaluating the slope of the road and the position of the bus stop (left)

Here is the former Friends' Meeting House from a slightly different angle but in considerably more detail

Lyn, its fascinating to realise that almost certainly one of the photographers on the canopy of the Gaumont Cinema or the balcony of the Wesleyan Insurance (centre) was a 'Daily Mirror' reporter responsible for the capture reproduced here:- Here's the second of just two photos Mirror-wise...

Where in Birmingham was this taken ??

Not only, but in the middle of the larger photo (in the centre on the left side of the smaller) can be seen half of the distinctive red and white brickwork of Birmingham Garages. This will have been the main public entrance in Suffolk Street, whilst the other entrance to the workshops was round...

Reminds me of one of the great movie images of the past, John Wayne in the John Ford classic, "The Searchers" with John Wayne silhouetted against the door and then walking off into the sunset...

I think its a later photo too. The JCB is too modern. With the Cinephone on the right the digger is off-road anyway, preparing the way for the "new" Bristol Street Motors later become Monaco House and the Volvo dealership. Would put it early 1970s?

    New Street Station From 1854 - 1966

Regarding our railway memories over the past 50+ years for me, and in connection with my posting on the Cadbury's Railways thread, Mr. Michael Portillo Esq of the Great British Railways programme is hosting a radio documentary this coming weekend about the Beeching Railway turmoil: BBC Radio4...

    old evening mail pics.....

The Bristol Road Paynes shop is the obvious choice: corner property with traffic lights adjacent, and sporting a heavyweight Esso hoarding too. https://www.photobydjnorton.com/BristolRdNrBristolCinema.html

    City Centre Photographs

From just a year or so earlier comes this almost identical photograph here. Forumers might like to have a competition to circle how many changes have taken place in such a short space of time.

    Broad Street

From 'Postcard World' one of the many postcard heritage sites, with the caption of "Broad Street from Five Ways". Is there any remote chance of a match here?

    Birmingham Cinemas

The Futurist had its main entrance on John Bright Street but its extended so its rear end was on Hill Street. Its still there, but under what name by now have no idea. It became the Spearmint Rhino Club in more recent years (1990's?)

    Bull Ring 1960s - 1980s

Photo in posting No.336. you can just imagine the couple seen at the very bottom of the photo saying to each other, "Well I HOPE this is all going to lead to some improvement.....". ...and here to the nearest millimetre is the exact same spot some 22 years later. Bull Ring well into its...

    Kids Games

Me too Lyn, not quite the right pelvis swing somehow. Remember if they took in water due to just pinpricks of wear and it could take years to squeeze it all out again!
