    Granville Street Ladywood

I found these adverts for 102 Granville Street from the Birmingham Daily Post - assuming the numbers were the same in 1882 it seems to have been a house with a coal yard/stabling. The advert for coal for sale is dated 6 February 1882 and the one for 102 to rent is dated 9 September 1882

Hopefully in Bridge Street it was just mud that was up to their ankles and not horse manure. Terrible accident at Cadman's bank - poor horses being buried alive and how horrible for the man that his dream came true. I would imagine the Pub bank didn't do any good because most of the money that...

That is surprising Mike - I would have thought there would be more. I was so intrigued I had a look in the papers to see if Charles Walters was mentioned again - I found one mention on 1 November 1865 of a Charles Walters appearing as a witness in a manslaughter inquest held at the Old Stone...

How horrible to use acid like that - if it burnt material that quickly imagine how painful it would be if it dripped onto their skin! The conditions in the workhouse 'Tramp room' sound very grim and as usual Mike you have raised questions - who was Charles Walters and why did he find himself...

I wonder if housing the young criminals in the Schools for the poor worked? Where were the Schools and what are they now - I notice there is a 500 year lease for the purpose of a School.

MOLESWORTH Edwin from Birmingham: Served 6 months in Warwick House of Correction.

Re: Edwin MOLESWORTH from Birmingham: Served 6 months in Warwick House of Correction. Jane, do you have the actual date for the March 1841 conviction?

I shouldn't think there was much left in the Sea Horse Tavern after that sale. Not sure what type of piano a piano-forte is. What an amazing life Mr William Godfrey had. His 'roaming disposition' certainly led to many varied jobs and money making ventures. It makes you wonder what he might...

Very grateful for Warstone Lane L/U please - EVANS and DANIELS.

Jane, I think I have just found the obituary for Lucy Groves - died 5th January 1873, age 22. She was married as it says: wife of William Groves of Larches Street, Sparkbrook. Youngest daughter of Mr George Luckman of Darwin Street. Do you have anyone with the surname Luckman in your family?

Hi Jane, Thanks for letting us know the outcome. As you can't find a connection to the Groves it does seem likely that the grave was re-sold to Elizabeth Daniels - although as you say if she was poor it is a mystery how she afforded it - and don't forget the cost of the headstone would have been...

I wonder if she ever got back to Ireland - seems a little fussy to me especially considering the other articles about people people starving to death! I think you're right about the greengrocer - of course she was only thinking about the churchgoers and not her profits.

I read it and it reminded me of recent cases too - the one's where the 'lessons have been learnt' statement always get used - as if somehow that excuses what has happened. I notice on the second report the names of the people involved are not given - I don't think I have noticed that before in...

    Walking my Dog

That's a lovely painting Eric I can see why you don't want to part with it. Does the farm have special memories for you? Is that you and your wife on it? I think I can remember the other ones but will have another look at them - if I can find them.

Beautiful painting Eric and what a lucky dog Sam is to be adopted by you. I would think there are a lot of paths that look just like that today after all the rain we have had lately. What are the other 4 paintings of that you will not part with? Have you already posted them on the forum?

Jane, You may find that the 4th person in the grave is not related to your family as quite often old graves without a headstone were resold in later years to another family who then put a headstone on it. I know this happened in the nearby Key Hill Cemetery and I think it happened in Warstone...

Hi Jane, When did Elizabeth's second husband (Mr ? Daniels) die - was it before Alfred died in 1884? Could he have bought the grave? You can buy a copy of the original entry in the burial register from BMSGH - for a grave that has multiple burials they charge £4 for the first entry and 50p for...

Elizabeth DANIELS [1891] aged 60 years and of Emily EVANS who died November 21st 1903 aged 41 years. "Thy will be done."...

I hope you don’t mind me going back to the article in post#1093 about the explosion/Gas water slide chandelier but I have managed to get some photos of one. I am told this one is dated approx pre 1880 as they changed in design afterwards. Because it is on the ceiling some of the photos had to...
