hello Dave - this is a bit puzzling as although I can find mentions of the streets being named after the Vaughton family no one seems to explain who Robert Vaughton was.
I have found - using various web sites - that Robert Darwin Voughton/Vaughton (b.1795 - d.1851) married Mary Ann Dymoke...
Lyn, I am so glad your friend saved this memorial plaque and kept it safe for so many years and then thought to give it to you. I hope relatives of these brave men find their way to our forum and that you manage to get it back on display somewhere.
Have you contacted the Birmingham Mail?
I have searched the old papers again using Ogley Hay and still can't find anything - very disappointing as Pubs are usually easy to find articles on :(
Mike, what lovely pictures you have chosen to put on your dear mums order of service. In just three photos you have managed to say so much about your mum's personality and her life. I have been thinking about you these last two weeks and please know that I will be thinking about you tomorrow x
Mike,
I think It's Brownhills, Walsall.
I've searched in the old papers - using various combinations of name, street, location, landlords name - and can't find it mentioned - unusual for a pub.
Astonian thank you for the Information and your memories of the building.
Mike - I didn't realise that Deritend used to come under the parish of Aston - no wonder I was confused! Thank you.
Mr Zippy- Yes - the Tavern you were looking for in 'Aston' is the one in Alcester Street, Deritend...
Now I am confused - I have just found a mention of The Compasses in Alcester Street Deritend - which means the above articles may be about that one and not the one in Aston.:upset:
Here are two mentions of the Compasses Inn, Alcester Street in the Birmingham Daily Post. Both are from later years than your ancestors were there but at least they prove it was there.
The first one about the theft is from Friday 9th January 1874
The second one about the death of Mr Woodall is...
I thought the snippet may be useful because Graham mentioned a James Baragwanth importing pistoles or having them imported to the UK. He also mentions the possibility of Queen Victoria becoming fond of them. As Queen Victoria died in January 1901 if there is any truth in the story I would think...
Nicholas, Looking at that document it definitely reads as if the grave was first made in 1779.
Is it possible that Dr. R. J. Hetherington had access to documents in the archives that had once belonged to Hanson who had added further 'markings' or research notes to the map he had made in 1778...
When I read the first post I took the place of the grave to be where the junction of Bath Row and Islington Row is 'presently' and not where it was in 1779.
As Phill says the document was written in the 1950's then I would think the grave is where the corner of Bath Row and Islington Row was at...
That sounds an interesting family story Lois.
So your gt. gt grandfather was born about 1827 with the name John Henry Weston and on the 1851 census he is listed as John Smith born 'Holyhull' Warwickshire and he was deceased by 1909.
Do you know what his brothers name was - and did he change to...
I have just found a thread on this forum about Holly Hall and Mikejee has posted a map - I notice on the map it is one word Hollyhall.
https://birminghamhistory.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=28736
I noticed that Bernard and wondered if it said Holyheath - although I have no suggestions for where that may be.
There is a village called Holly Hall in Dudley but at that time it would have been under Worcestershire not Warwickshire - could possibly be a mistake by the enumerator?
Lois - I...
