Hello there, bob, Is the Dermot Bevan you mention above the lad sitting on your right? He came to Bordesley Green Tech; he was in my form. Any news of him? David

Birmingham Schools Football History / & photos

Good morning, Len, I imagine your second photograph was taken at the Oaklands Playing Fields, given that the school was just across Church Road. I can't remember a mound of earth that end of the park. It's as if the photo was taken in Holder Road, not far from the old pavilion. Any ideas? David...

Hello there, Jean, long time, no 'c' (communication ??!?). Excuse me, Jean, but are you sure it's the school's football team in your photo? Their attire seems to be more like that of a gymnastics team; and the goalie and centre forward making up the eleven are enormous! Best wishes, D. [Wink!]

Motor Torpedo Boats + RAF Rescue Boats

Good morning, Len, I’m afraid almost 48 hours have gone by but at last I’ve found a little time to go into the history of the Aberystwyth boat. Based on your search suggestion in Post #13 (better to type in “TS Thunderer Aberystwyth”; if not, Google comes up with the BHF posting and an avalanche...

Birmingham Schools Football History / & photos

Here's another one, bob. This is Bordesley Green Junior School 1st Eleven 1958/59. We were averagely successful but I can't recall having won any trophies. What I do remember is picking the ball out of the back of the net in a game against Alston Road Junior School TEN times! They were a one-man...

Birmingham Schools Football History / & photos

Hello there, bob, I go along with all you've said ...... and I'll give the ball another shove. Here's my contribution. It's the Bordesley Green Tech. team of 1960/61 and it shows eleven of my contemporaries plus the master who trained the team. I could send in a photograph which shows all their...

Motor Torpedo Boats + RAF Rescue Boats

Oh, what a shame! I wonder how that came about. The writer says, "the two big American petrol engines had been removed". She must have been towed out into the Bay and scuttled !!! I'll go into this in the morning, Len. It's midnight here. Thanks awfully for the connection. Good night, David

Motor Torpedo Boats + RAF Rescue Boats

When I was a boy, there was a retired MTB permanently moored alongside in Aberystwyth harbour. She was named TS Thunderer. The local troop of Sea Cadets used her as their headquarters. With Birmingham’s strong connection with mid-Wales, as anyone any idea of what happened to her? David

Absolutely marvellous !!!! I think we've got something going here ...... thanks to Astonian! He really got me thinking about surnames which automatically give their owners a nickname. This is a list of surname-associated nicknames which come to mind : Murphy ……………… “Spud” Murphy / Taylor White...

Good morning, sandracoley, May I ask a rather personal question? Did your 7-year-old sister used to eat an unusual quantity of food? Personally I've always heard the nickname "Hollowlegs" applied to someone with an enormous appetite. David

Yes, it has ..... indeed a fabulous photo. You were either extremely fast or lucky to capture this magical moment. Did the young girl think it was written in Braille? Only joking! Well done, David

    Nicknames & Petnames

Between late 1968 and mid-1971, I worked in an accountants' office on Smallbrook Ringway (as it was then). A fellow articled clerk of Indian extraction had fled with his family from Uganda when Amin took control of the country in January 1971. We quickly became great friends and I started to...

Good evening, Alf, I tried to view your wonderful home yesterday evening ...... but couldn't get in. I tried your links in Posts #15 and #17 again a short time ago ..... to no avail. I've even experimented with both Internet Explorer and Firefox ...... unsuccessfully. Perhaps Mike could explain...
