    Bordesley Green

Good morning, Manasseh, Although the Gordon Street you remember has long since gone, did you notice that the name lives on? It is no longer a 'street'; more like an alley or passage. And it seems to have been moved slightly to the west, that is, towards the city centre. . It's to be seen...

    Birmingham buses

Hello there, ragga, If I remember correctly, the Wimbush's bread cum cake shop which can be seen to the right of the bus was on the corner of Arden Oak Road. The road layout has been changed somewhat. David (db)

    Brummie sayings & language

You could very well be right, Lloyd. According to dictionary.com, it first appeared in the English language between 1890 and 1895. In Italian the word is "cacca", but my Italian dictionary gives its origins as the 15th Century! Probably from Latin : cacare to defecate. D.

    The Ragged School Penn St.

Good evening, Dek, I was fascinated too by this name. There is a thread on the Forum entitled "Penn Street Industrial School". If you go to Post #2, Alberta wrote "industrial schools were for children who were destitute or who it was thought might be in the company of people who were a bad...

    Mrs Gill - conductress

With all the former bus drivers, conductors/conductresses and ex-transport company employees on the Forum, does anyone know Mrs Gill who certainly worked on the buses in the late '50s/ early 60s? Her son, Michael, was a great friend of mine at Bordesley Green Tech. and I would very much like to...

    Brummie sayings & language

I'd never heard the word 'stale' until maggs mentioned it in Post #623. I looked it up immediately; it does exist. As the question of spelling has now come up, dictionary.com gives me 'stail' : A handle, as of a mop. It adds that the spelling in England is 'stale'. My New Shorter Oxford English...

    Brummie sayings & language

David, Please excuse my butting in. I think you'll find that the most common spelling is "kaylied". Jean's spelling "kalied" is given as an alternative, as is "kailed". Apparently the word has entered the English language from Scouse. David

Evacuation Of Children World War 2

Thanks very much, ChrisM, for letting us know where Lyn's postings were. The thread you mention in Post #8 is certainly fascinating in that we're shown the two extremities of human "hospitality". Fortunately most people seem to have found generous, understanding host families. On the other hand...

    Bordesley to Yardley road.

I stumbled upon this thread and realised almost immediately that I had done a very similar walk on 17th July, 2006. I too saw three long boats chugging their way along the canal. I was thrilled to see that one of them had been hired by a group of youngsters. What a joy to see that these young...

Quinton Danillo Essoldo etc etc etc!!

...... fascinating theory, Mike, well spotted! Wikipedia begs to differ: "The (TESCO) company was founded by Jack Cohen in 1919 and opened its first store in 1929 in Burnt Oak, Edgware, Middlesex. The Tesco name first appeared after Cohen purchased a shipment of tea from T.E. Stockwell and...
