    Birmingham Speedway, Perry Barr

Only just come across this thread and Oh the memories it brings back. Used to go to every home match way back in 46 - 48 when I went to do National Service. Use to go with my first girl friend so heart racing for two reasons.

    Young offenders detention centre

Welcome Robbie and thanks for your post. As Lynn says it was thought provoking and it is too easy to judge people. After 20 years as a probation officer and 20 years as foster parents I have met many folk that have been misjudged and seen as worthless but deep down are better than those that are...

    MY FIRST/SECOND GRANDCHILD

I don't do face book either, too much rubbish. Love these last few contributions. We are getting some lovely photos of our great grandchildren [twins] born 5th May. Problem is they live away so wont see them for a while yet

    Gaumont cinema

Didn't go to the Gaumont very often, but my fondest memory is when my wife and I visited Mom & Dad and she asked if we would take them there to see the Sound of Music, think it was 1965, I don't think they ever forgot it. We still love that film.

    Prisoners of War WW2 photos

What a great thread, only just come across it. It was good to see that in most of the photos the guys looked reasonably healthy. More than can be said for those in Japanese Prisoner of war camps. One of our neighbours living at 46 Abbey Road Erdington, think his name was Upton, was in a Japanese...

    Air raid shelters

What a great photo. Although not a good time for anyone no doubt the photo brings back happy memories. As far as size of the Morrison shelter my uncles room was no larger than 12 ft X 12 ft and his was also also in the middle of the room. They also used it as a table fully fledged with a cloth on it

Rag And Bone Man Ragman Tatters

Seem to remember the word being used by my gran who used to cut up material and make rugs with a hessian backing - lasted for years

Breaking a curtilage and larceny meaning

Agree with AMW, amazes me how much info. there comes up on this site. I wondered if the word " Breaking" on the register refers to actually breaking down a fence/wall to gain entry, or just breaking the law in this matter. It would be interesting to know what the sentence was in this case

    Air raid shelters

I don't think many people had the Morison shelters. They took up a lot of room and didn't look pleasant. My uncle had one because he didn't want to dig up his garden for an Anderson shelter. I didn't hear of anyone whose house or nearby was bombed so don't know how successful they were but if we...

    Strange toys

Wow! Thanks for that Morturn. I get more amazed every day at what you can find on the internet and more so at what the folk on this wonderful site find out for you. Apart from the boat on the video being somewhat posher than mine it worked exactly the same. It certainly brings back memories of...

    Strange toys

Don't know why but as I woke this morning I suddenly thought of a toy I used to love playing with,[ perhaps in old age wishing I could get back to my childhood]. It was a little tin speedboat, about 3 inches long and you put a little bit of lighted candle or taper in it and somehow it would...

    Prize Gun Works

Thanks for that mikejee. They are proposing to put 34 one bed, 44 two bed and 4 three bed apartments in it. I wonder what provision they will make for car parking. Also how much they will be charging for each apartment.

    Prize Gun Works

Article in Express & Star the other day that detailed planning permission being sort to make 84 apartments at the Gunsmith House in Price street. Would this be the building in the photos above? Can't find any reference to Gunsmith House in any thread.

    Hobbies 2021

Looks to me from side view there are octagonal nuts at the ends near the watch. Have you tried unscrewing them. Sadly I can't remember now how to remove a link. My dad used to do watch repairs and I used to see him remove links but age caught up with me.

    My Nan's sayings

Nico saying about someone talking too much reminded me of what used to be said "They've been vaccinated with a gramophone needle"

    My Nan's sayings

Suddenly thought this morning whilst taking my daily dose of vitamins of what they used to say when I was a kid and they felt exhausted, " I need a foofoo pill" [not a clue how you would spell it ]

Certainly an interesting article OldMohawk. How thankful we should be for the skill and dedication of all involved

    Things kids say.

Presenter on radio this morning said he went shopping with his lad on Saturday and whilst looking around the veg. stall asking what they should have, his son asked him if he wanted any 'Man get out'. Of course dad hadn't a clue until he took him to it, and then explained it was a French word...
