Thank you, now of course more things are coming back to me we had to pull off the vacuum lines going to the drums to replace the belts and they could be ( Brummie Saying) a real cow bag. Then when installing the new belts you had to pull on them real hard so they would open up the drum and slide...

    old car snaps

I can't remember it's been almost 50 years since I sat in one I remember the clutch was centrifugal with brake like shoes mounted in a circle that flew out against a drum as the engine speed increased Then we had to adjust the belts when we performed normal services. Volvo dropped the 33 and 44...

My second full time job was at a DAF dealer in Cotteridge, and they were a little quwerky but they were a good alternative to the invalid carriage from the Government. The simple shift forward or backwoods made them attractive for some along with the cost. A good majority of the customers/owners...

So much to add here but a gas shortage in the 70's is a place to start for America. England made small cars that got decent mileage, a look at man hours per car build, England was twice as many compared to other countries. So yes we did give a lot away.

I tell you what they did do, leave a skid marks as long as you liked from the tyre spin it one belt broke. Nasty little job replacing the belts, ask me how I know about tyre spin and a belt change.

I am in total agreement about the B series engine that's one of the things I liked about Austin engines there just seemed to have more . When I walked to school I would come down the Lickey Road up and over the Longbridge then turn down Longbridge Lane, but just on the corner all those blocks...

20 thousand miles !!!! These guys are crazy then another 5 thousand !!!!. Talk about living on the edge, of course those numbers today are a joke, but back in the 70's 60 thousand was considered real high mileage. Love those old Path'e films with the semi dramatic music and almost documentary feel.

    1960s cars

Jaguar lifted the oil filled engine mounting idea from buses and stationary engines. For the XJ 12 in 1994, Jaguar was obsessed with mounting as much as possible to isolate the body.

As someone who grew up in and around the Austin Car Co and walked past it every day to school I can not believe it's gone. Any one who knows the area this company had a huge foot print. They had auto trails in the car park on weekends it was so big. Now to see the home of the Mini ( the real one...

    Birmingham Accents

First off I read the article in post #31 and as a Brummie I was offended the suggesiton that someone with a Brummie accent is likely a thief or a criminal . What ever the cost of that research it would have been better spent on the mating habits of shrimp. Birmingham has been the brunt of...

I do not recall anyone from Bromsgrove having a Brummie accent, I went to college there and also lived close and Bromsgrove was a regular hang out. As I recall a Bromsgrove accent was more country.
