Here you are Rosie, the ones I am doing for my daughter (that's why I used new fabric, I wanted specific colours) plus a larger yellow one which I am going to use for a flower. A smaller one in the middle plus a button should do nicely.

That's trye Rosie, but although I do have arthritis in my fingers, it's only my thumb joint that is badly affected. I don't find it makes a lot of difference to me. I find my eyes the worst thing, I can do a little, then my eyes get blurry. I have worn glasses since I was 10, so was surprised...

Rosie I think your cushion, when you get round to it will be a real talking point. A Suffolk Puff, briefly, is a circle of fabric which you then turn in at the edge a tiny bit, run stitches round and gather it up tightly. Then flatten it. The Americans call them yo-yos, but a Suffolk Puff was...

Aurora - thank you for these hints. I have made lavender bags before, but not used the ribbons as I always make them in lilac or purple, but will now change my ideas. Very useful for making for the local fetes etc. I don't do cards, I tried that but it was not my favourite, but at the moment...

    Hercules Manor Works Long Acre

Could it be the Rover works at Tyseley? My husband is convinced the photo was Smethwick somewhere. So many factories, that's the problem.

    Old document queries

There was no official adoption until 1927/8, so perhaps this document was the next best thing, so that it was 'official' rather than the child just being handed over?

Mike, there were lead-lined coffins, often used to prevent bodily fluids from running out. I think often they were used in catacombs. There were also other metal coffins, not sure if they were iron or steel, but certainly a heavy metal. Just a craze at a time I think, just imagine the weight.

    Camden Drive And Camden Grove

Well Charlie, perhaps the fact that the streets were one off the other, made it difficult for not just the average man, but postal deliveries, etc, so I can understand why it did change, even if not officially (not checked any new maps). Key Hill Cemetery was not called that, it was just what...

    Camden Drive And Camden Grove

Charlie - I have a birth certificate of one of my family from Cheltenham who came to Birmingham for four years during the 1850's, and the birth place is Camden Grove. I was curious as I knew of Camden Drive but not the Grove. They are not the same place, Camden Grove is the bit down the side...

St Margarets Hospital - Great Barr

It's totally dreadful that children with disabilites were considered sub-normal, but that was simply a hangover from the Victorian age. It was easier, I guess to just declare that these children were sub-normal than to find a way of teaching them - how frustrated they must have felt, and angry...

    Handsworth

Hi Judy - I can't find the post where I mention The Grand - it's not a place I remember to be honest. I wqas only there from 1960-64. Opposite woolworths was the MEB abd the Post Office, both set back, then there was the Market and Hawkins (not sure if in that order). One of the shops along...

    My dad

Lyn, I am so sorry to hear your sad news. My condolences to you and your family. Memories live forever, that's worth remembering at times like this, and you have some lovely ones. xxx

The interesting things Mike, is that common interments did not cease in 1863 at either Key Hill or Warstone Lane. Perhaps public opinion dictated this, or perhaps it was because the council wanted the money diverted to Witton?

    Lewis's Department Store

Judy - what year was that then, do you know? I was still queueing after we came to live in Tamworth in 1972. I have a photo of my daughter with Father Christmas taken that year, I may not have been there after that. It was the highlight of my year, Lewis's Christmas Grotto was the best to be...

Do you know what year your gt gt aunt is supposed to have married this person and in what town? If you have a name it would help. I know where the original Blondin is buried, and it might be worth working from that end if you have no clues at all.

I have always done certain things my mother used to do, such as buy lots of soap and keep it until it is hard, that way it last much much longer, I still save paper bags - they are a rarity these days but they do have them in chemist shops. I have used shopping bags for years - ever since...

    Items that have faded away

Carolina, I don't think you can blame Americanism, at least not entirely. The loss of the letter 't' is estuary English, and some of the blame is surely to be placed with the education system. I have several friends who were teachers, so I am not biased, but I do remember quite clearly my...

    Occupations That Have Faded Away

How about the "pure" collector -went round the streets collecting dog excrement for use in Tanning -people actually made a living out of this in Victorian times

    Soho Road Handsworth

Hi Judy, I remember going up the stairs, but I was under the impression they were old, and not new - is it possible that the old and new buildings could have been combined? I used to go on Wednesdays too, for lessons, and Saturdays too, but only until I met my husband in August 1963. He does...

    Brummie sayings & language

My mother and grandmother used to say 'never in a month of Sundays' - presumably Sunday was a long day (no playing, no fun, no games, only church), and just recently I found myself saying it too.
