Nice to see the chemist shop Viv, in the 1960's it was Barclay's Bank on that corner. The buildings might be there, but it is so sadly neglected these days it's almost unrecognisible. It's abou tnine months since I travelled along this road.

    The Rubber Shop in Smethwick

Paul, I don't agree that the lady in the black and white photo looks 1970's - I think her hairstyle is just a simple bob, but her hair is possibly naturally wavy so it would not look the same as a normal bob. I think the dresses certainly look very 1940's. Trousers in the 1940's and early...

    Sabin and Stockley, Wine Merchants

That explains it all Mike, thank you. Seeing where Mr Hunt's business was and where the service road was/is, I can understand fully why there was an argument. Perhaps they all lacked a bit of patience! However, I do need to check, but I thought the Co-op bank was 123 and that's on the...

    Graham St School

Polly, these are very interesting indeed. It does make the school sound rather a pleasant place to be, but I wonder if it was a home from home? I doubt it really. The reason this came up is that we have found a girl in there, which may be related to the family we are researching. Her father...

    Sabin and Stockley, Wine Merchants

Thanks Maurice, so from that I can assume the stores, or some at least, must have been in Colmore Row, possibly at the rear of another business. I am due to go back to Birmingham fairly soon, so will have to investigate further. I just love to walk the same streets as my forebears, and as that...

    Sabin and Stockley, Wine Merchants

Thankl Maurice, but is it the same one, or perhaps a different year? The newspaper article said that Thomas Jefcoate was loading his wagon, so I assumed the wine merchants place was on Colmore Row, or perhaps just storage? It's all good stuff though, never thought I would find anything like...

    Sabin and Stockley, Wine Merchants

Thanks Maurice. I know No 123 Colmore Row very well, it's the Co-op Bank now and when I worked in Waterloo Street, I was often in there. It's the passageway at the back that's the more interesting bit, although if Mike can tell me exactly where Mr Hunt had his premises it would make it even...

    Sabin and Stockley, Wine Merchants

Maurice - I have read the article again, and perhaps it was the pianoforte warehouse that was being spoken about. That gives me a better idea of the location - I am looking for the service road where the incident took place. I obvoiusly read it too quickly, as it does not mention the business...

    Sabin and Stockley, Wine Merchants

Oh thanks Maurice. They must also have been a wine and spirit merchant as they were mentioned in a court case in 1892 (got this from the Library newspaper collection). One of their employees punched my gt grandfather, who also worked for a wine merchant, a Mr Hunt. Perhaps it was just an...

Can anyone tell me where the premises of Sabin and Stockley were please, in 1892. Shortie

It's a bit foreboding Les, don't you think? I wonder how they treated the girls?

    Graham St School

Than you Polly and Les - I am sure that must be it. It certainly fits in with what I already know. Thank you so much. Shortie

    Graham St School

Hi Jennyann, thank you for looking. I am not sure, I understood it to be a residential school, a census check is needed.

    Birchfield Road Perry Barr

Viv - I had never seen such pointy caps on a gate post before, they are really nice to be honest. the only ones I had seen were just plain but went into a point without the extended bit. Perhaps it would depend more on income than taste, which variety one chose to have outside one's obviously...

    Graham St School

In 1861 there was a residential school in Graham Street in the Jewellery Quarter. Can anyone tell me what exactly it was please? Thanks Shortie

    New Street Station From 1854 - 1966

That's a very sad photo Brumgum. I think Platform 9 was the one I used to get the Cheltenham train from - do matter what they do to New Street, it will never be the same, it had its own personality, never to be replaced.

    Graham Street Lozells

I think anywhere in Graham Street was fairly close to the pen factory - it was rather on the large and imposing side. Some of mine lived there, too, in the early 1900's. Graham Street is not terribly long, although I have not been for about five years but I do remember it was relatively shortish.

    Sarehole Mill

You have to ask to see the Rates Books. I have done this for a property my family lived in, just to check on the year they moved there. It gives the tenant, the rateable value and the owner. I believe they may have now been digitised - it's Archives you want, at least that's where the books...

    Lewis's Department Store

I remember the spaceship, but I thought that was at the Co-op. Lewis's was always better. I remember one year passing various scenes, one was the sandman throwing sand into the sleeping children's eyes. Lovely, the best memories ever from Lewis's.

    Arthur Street, Small Heath

Brumgum, thank you. I should have googled it I guess, thanks for reminding me to activate my brain before I type, too!
