    Hawkins jellied eels fish bar

After seeing Astonian's reply, I realised that I should have said "between PARK Lane & Barton Arms" not Rocky Lane. When I worked at B.S.A, I came home on the No8 bus, and when it came to turn from Park Lane across into Whitehead St, it always had to stop to cross High St. Although there was no...

    Hawkins jellied eels fish bar

That photo brings back memories! The hall was situated about halfway down the hill between Rocky Lane & Barton Arms pub. Hawkins was further up on the same side (to the left of the photo). It looks like it was taken after 1967 because it wasn't a dual carriageway until after that.

    Birmingham Cinemas

Hi Chris, This Cinema was in Edward St on the corner of Helena St. I used to go to the Saturday Matinees there in 1953 when I lived in New Spring St.

In 1962 when I was 16, I went to the Odeon, Perry Barr with a couple of mates. The Manager was standing on the steps and refused to let us in because we were wearing drainpipe jeans!! No amount of persuasion would change his decision so, we went up to the Villa Cross which was showing the same...

    The Swan Victoria Road

Hi Lyn, unfortunately, that too has now been demolished! I have sent a google image of the Aston Pride Community Health Centre that now resides on this spot. Last year you were corresponding with a guest, Paul Hammond about his Great Aunt running both the White Swan & the Manor Tavern. So was my...

    The Swan Victoria Road

Thanks Phil, that's the one! It was demolished in the early 60s and the replacement one stood further from the road. My aunt Betty Middleham ran this one around 1959/60 and I always remember that they had an Indian Mynah bird in the bar!

I'm sure the Birchfield Road underpass opened on my 16th birthday, 27th March 1962. Nowadays I prefer it the way it was on Astoness's photo No 2

Monks & Co Of Balsall Heath

I was telling my grandkids about a certain pork pie I used to like in the 1950s. Monk's pork pie was the pie and I'm sure the factory was in Balsall Heath Road. Anyone got any photos of it? I also remember a van that used to deliver to our local grocery shop which had a picture of a huntsman on...

I think that the opulence and the sense of occasion was indeed the key feature of a "night at the pictures". The Orient at six ways, Aston even had a tearoom on the first floor directly over the entrance. It had a large window at the front where you could look out while drinking your tea (...

    Manor Tavern Aston Cross

I also lived at this pub in 1957/58. It was run by my Aunt Betty Middleham & Uncle Frank. I slept with my cousin, Johnny in the corner bedroom. Every night the bedroom was lit up by the big neon sign on the Ansells Brewery across Lichfield Rd. Red - Red/green - green - back to Red all night long!

    The Swan Victoria Road

My Aunt Betty Middleham & Uncle Frank used to run The White Swan, Victoria Rd in late 50s, and I lived in the masonettes opposite (80 Victoria Rd) from 1960 - 1967 with my stepmom & Dad, Norman Jones who was a barman there.

    Chelmsley Wood.

When I moved here in 1968, Dr Pomeroy was situated in a house on Greenlands Road, I think No71? I think it was just him and a nurse/secretary. He occupied the Dinette/Kitchen area and the waiting room was the Lounge. Was the upstairs used I wonder.

You are two years older than me Fredrick.I suppose that is why we were not friends in 1954-5. I was living with Jack & Marie Bradbury at No 69 during that time. I remember being in Mr White's class at Clifton road School.
