    Gun Trade Factories

There is no "gun quarter" anymore because all the little back alley buildings that the gun tradesmen worked in are gone. When I worked part time after school as a kid in 1960, the streets I delivered gun parts to & collected gun parts from were Price Street, Loveday Street, Bath Street, Whittall...

    Pan Statue Aston Hall

Has it been restored now? As this thread was started in 2011, I feel that I am a bit late in sending this photo from 1965 showing my wife & Bruce the dog.

They Were Caught In Our Old Street Pics...

Enjoyed that website linked above Mikejee. The Woodsetton Toll House in the Black Country Living Museum has a brick "beehive" shape built into the front corner recess to prevent tradesmen who tried to urinate there. I presume it had the same outcome that the tilted metal bars had.

    Gun Trade Factories

Hi Sylvia, I'm six years late but, a couple of years ago I tried to find a thread but didn't, about people who worked part time from school in the gun trade. Yours is the only reference I've seen that refers to the school lads who ran the errands. Like your Dad, I did the same thing. In 1959 I...

    Whitehead street, Aston

I started a thread on Whitehead Street a couple of years ago looking for any photos of it and now I've just come across this thread which finished 8yrs ago!!!! When my wife & me got married in February 1967, we lived with my in-laws (Mr & Mrs Rogers) who lived at No 9 Whitehead St. I can tell...

    2 to identify please

Hi Lyn, only 8yrs late but, although I'm sure you did get your photo eventually, I was intrigued by the debate on the Vine Inn which was on the corner of Alma St & Whitehead St. I was reading the thread yesterday after finding the map of this pub which was posted by Mikejee. It was dated 1889 so...

    Old street pics..

Anyone familiar with Stoney Lane in the 50s? When I lived in Leamington Rd I went to the barber on Stoney Lane (0pposite Wilton Rd). You can see the barber's pole in this photo so, it must have been there some time. He used to have a plank of wood to rest on the arms of the chair so that us kids...

    Pubs Of The Past

Hi Astonian, this photo is a bit before our time I suspect but, this is the White Swan I remember when Aunt Betty ran it in 1959.

    Pubs Of The Past

Thanks for your help folks. The Travellers Rest it was. Actually, I also lived opposite the White Swan in the 60s at 80 Victoria Road. In fact, my Aunt Betty Middleham ran it about 1959.

    Pubs Of The Past

Hi Terry, it's not the Scotch House I'm looking for. Pub I referred to was in Whitehead Rd between High St and Victoria Rd. Thank you for your reply anyway.

    Pubs Of The Past

Does anyone know the name of the pub that was on the corner of Whitehead Road & Barton Bank in Aston? A photo would be great.

    Unused railway "arm" in Digbeth.

Thanks Phil, that clarifies it perfectly for me. Would love to see if there was a photo of them though.

    Unused railway "arm" in Digbeth.

I've always been intrigued by these structures in Great Barr St/ Liverpool St. Reading the previous comments, I conclude that they are an unfinished project. So, I'm wondering if anyone knows if the bridges were ever built over the roads and dismantled later.

    Alma Street, Six Ways, Aston

Seeing this from Mikejee, my wife's family lived at No 9 Whitehead St (next to the factory) until everything was demolished in 1967 and I've often wondered what happened to Nos 11, 13 & 15 . Also, opposite was open ground with a petrol station on it. Could it have been due to WWII bombing? Would...

What was in the B.C.T. Conductors Black Box

I always had the same one. At the end of the day after paying in, I would put it in a small locker to which I had a key. This locker had no back to it, which enabled the ticket numbers to be checked against what I had paid in. This check was carried out randomly but, was usually once a fortnight.

    Lozells Girls School

Just been trawling through this thread with my wife Sheila. She was there from 1958-1962. She remembers those teachers Miss Reed, Miss Gumbly. Miss Cage. Miss Jewel. Sheila says that when she did cookery, it was on the upper floor of the building on the left of the photo on Lyn's post #134. I...

    Whitehead street, Aston

This is an incident that happened in Whitehead Street during October 1963. I wonder if anyone living in the area at the time remembers it. My girlfriend of 3 months lived next door to the house in the photo and the Mr Albert Rogers mentioned in the article was my future Father-in-Law.

    Whitehead street, Aston

A photo from the Alton Douglas book, Birmingham in the 60s. It shows the corner shop run by a Mrs Herbert which was on the corner of Whitehead St & Alma St. It was taken in 1967 when the Street was closed due to the coming re-development.

    Whitehead street, Aston

Just came across this pic which was taken at the same time as my other photo. This time looking to the corner of Whitehead Street & Alma Street. The open ground on the right was part of the petrol station.
