    Windermere Rd Park/ground Saved

Just came across this brilliant site tracing history of Moseley Bog & Windermere Field. https://andyunderscore.com/2018/02/11/moseley-bog-through-time/

    Harborne

Very interested in photographs of Harborne Railway. Harborne library has a wonderful collection of photographs & other material on the railway. Some on display in the library entrance hall, along with the signal box nameplate. Well worth a visit. Incidentally they have a much better collection...

    Origins of the Brummie accent

My wife (Kings Heath - born & bred) always says mom. In Liverpool it's mum. After 50 yrs of marriage still don't agree on this but I guess both are just as correct. Mind you, in Liverpool if you were from an even rougher part than I was, it was mam or our mam.. When in Rome........................

    A House Through Time

Fascinating programme especially for an ex-scouser. I went to school for five years a few blocks away from Falkner St. Spent many a lunch time wandering around the area (unofficially - needed to climb the school railings to get out). This area is now called the Georgian Quarter - Liverpool has...

    The Willows In Moseley

Hi, the historical boundary between Warwicks/Edgbaston & Worcs./Moseley was, I think, the River Rea. Willows Road was well into Worcs. However, it could just be possible that it was in Balsall Heath which was also in Worcs - not sure where the historical boundary between the two was. Any...

    Lanchester Cars

Hi pjmburns - my fault. Post no 8 should have read: As originally built, the two storey centre portion (now 128B + C) was the original house. When turned into flats 128B was downstairs & 128C upstairs. Both 128B + C are now for sale ie the central two storey part. My apols.

    Lanchester Cars

Can't help but refer members back to post 8 above! Couple of points. When the houses in Oxford Road were numbered (early 1920s?), there were only 2 houses there. These were numbered 128 & 130. When the Lanchester house was built [infill] it was numbered 128A. When it was split into 4 "flats"...

    Lanchester Cars

I live by the Lanchester House & it's had a bit of a chequered history. As originally built, the two storey centre portion (now 128B + 128C) was the original house. The building to the left (now 128D) was the original garage. The building to the right (now 128A) was a later extension - garage...

    Sparkhill Commercial School

The newly elected Yardley Rural District Council met initially (1894) in the Sparkhill Institute, which had been built a few years before, opposite Inglewood Road and then in the new [Yardley] Council House (1902-12). This is the original Institute: The present building looks very different...

    Bread Vehicles

Lukers must have been a real go-ahead family As well as the bakery & "outdoor" at 21 & 23 Woodbridge Road, Nora Luker opened a ladys outfitters at no. 25 for a time. John Luker hit the headlines in 1964 when he ordered a new LEFT HAND DRIVE delivery van; easier to get in & out quickly when...

    Holidays of the past

Hi All, If you count the River Mersey as the sea, I was born, almost, within sight of it and visited the old Pier Head with my mum from long before I can remember. A trip across the Mersey on the ferry boat to New Brighton & the beach was a serious treat for a young lad in Toxteth! I've been...

    Measurements

Hi All, I'm probably wrong but I have a vague recollection of BHam Weights & Measures having an office in Broad Street. This would be in the 1960s when I used to walk down there regularly. On metrication, my grouse is that if you need a 6 foot length of timber ie 72", the so called metric...

    Moseley churches

Hi Brian, Not what you asked but may be of interest if you didn't come across it in St Marys Archives. Might be a relative? Genever, Eliza Harriet buried in St Marys Churchyard on 9/02/1881 Aged 31.

    Old street pics..

Salt (=sodium chloride) would have coloured the flame strong orange/yellow. As Radiorails mentioned different metals give different coloured flames - this is what gives different fireworks their colours.

    Luker's Bakery

Many thanks Viv. now added to my file on Luker's Bakery. In spite of being so well known, as least in Moseley, there is surprising little information available about them. Roy

    Luker's Bakery

Hi, has anyone got any information about Luker's Bakery that used to be in Woodbridge Road, Moseley? or any photographs of the shop? Would help me with the Moseley Churchyard Project/Luker Family. Many thanks

Wacaden Dairy Wathes Cattell & Gurden Dairy

Steri as we called it in Toxteth was not just a midland thing. I think it was widely available in most big towns. Definitely a bit "rough" to rely on steri but of course it didn't go off for yonks. Ordinary milk did but mum then used it to make the most delicious home made scones. [Apols from a...

Canadian Ex-servicemens Association - Birmingham Branch

I was given a box of old books on Birmingham a while ago & among them was this framed certificate of authorisation for the Birmingham Branch of the Canadian Ex-Servicemens Association. Nothing on google -. Anyone know anything about them? It's a lovely hand drawn item and clearly very old. Next...

    Church Of Christ Sparkhill

Some of my wifes family were also married at Christ Church. We were researching her family history and read that the church was about to be demolished & went over to take some photographs - just in time! Very sad pictures but thought might be of interest. PS: I see I've been promoted to a...
