    Street furniture

What an interesting post. Had a walk around our road [Moseley] to check local signs out using info in attachment: 1. Cast iron signs without post code may be victorian - sadly none in our area. 2. Cast iron signs attached to cast iron pedestal with post code are original and early. This one is...

    Library Of Birmingham 2013

Just a few observations from a retired [Birmingham] librarian: 1. The new building: attrocious. too small, lots of wasted space, poorly guided and few staff to help. Local Studies & Archives in particular inadequate in space & staffing. Try using a run of Kellys directories - can't use in situ...

    Grove Lane, Harborne

If Harborne Library wasn't closed to the public because of Covid 19................................ I was going to suggest that anyone interested in old photographs of Harborne visit Harborne Library as they have several hundred photographs of Harborne - much better collection than the Central...

    Moseley C Of E School

My three children all attended Moseley Church of England School. It was a very good school. After the new school was opened on Oxford Rd, the old school became a "community centre" known as Centre 13 & run by St Marys Church. It was a hive of activity from uniformed organisations, lunch clubs...

    Vulcan Bomber Fly-past

Visited the Midland Air Museum many years ago & actually sat in their Vulcan. Lot smaller than I imagined but wow, did it have character. I believe it's still there.

    Birmingham steel making

This brings back memories! I worked at Harborne Library many years ago and was looking for a centre piece for our heritage exhibition. One night we parked up in War Lane [Harborne] and stole a pot from the wall. We mounted it on a plinth in the centre of the exhibition and asked visitors to tell...

    Lych Gates

The lych gate at St Agnes Church, Moseley was badly damaged last August during police pursuit. Repairs just completed on Friday. Phots attached of before, after damage & after repair. Great to see real craftsmen at work. A little bit of our heritage saved.

    Kings Heath

Don'tknow about Birmingham but in similar situation in Liverpool, you could use the Ribble buses but a minimum fare - enough to put any scousers off! Was it the same on Midland Red? Before my time in Brum.

    Where is This? 35

I know it's a long time ago but I would love to see this picture. I am doing a bit of research on the Marshall family of Moseley and Henry Marshall had a chemists shop at I think 128 Alcester Road which I think would be near where MoneyWise was. Any info would be really interesting. Many thanks.

    Halesowen Railway

Interesting that both Halesowen Railway and the Harborne Railway are mentioned on this thread. Perhaps less well known is that the Harborne Railway was originally intended to continue on to Halesowen but vested railway interests prevented this.

    St Barnabas Erdington Monumental Inscriptions

I have some interest in graveyards having been recently involved in the restoration of the graveyard at St Marys, Moseley [more specifically recording the memorial inscriptions & researching their family histories]. The comments made in 2010 [yes, I know it's a long time ago] about St Barnabus...

Belton, Reverend Canon Francis George - St. Patrick's Highgate

What a coincidence! Just watched [recorded] "Mass" from St Albans, Highgate which includes the old parish of St Patricks. Rev. Belton was vicar of St Patricks from 1913-1945. There is a good history of St Patricks Church on the St Albans website although mainly about the building. It mentions a...

    Moseley Kings Heath Line

Just read the response of the Moseley Society/Moseley Forum to the planning application. Looks set to be a right ding-dong about it. Official application wants a junction with traffic lights controlling Wake Green Rd/Oxford Rd/station entrance area. Moseley Society/Moseley Forum prefere a new...

Moseley Houses and care of WW2 Casualties...

Better late than never........... The Lucas house in St Agnes Road, Moseley was used as a hostel during WWII according to article in Birmingham Post in 1998. See copy of part of the article below: The property, which was built in 1899, was the dream home of Mr Harry Lucas, the eldest son of Mr...

    Birmingham Pin Makers

Fattorini's are still going strong in their original [Birmingham] factory in Regent Street which I guess counts as in the Jewellery Quarter. But remember "pins" doesn't equate just to badge making. Birmingham was also the centre for machine pin making eg for dressmaking. I have a particular...

    Moseley Letter Box

As far as I can tell there has been no decision yet on this application. However, owner submitted revised plans late May - look exactly the same as original plans. both of which are inaccurate and downright misleading. Would be interested to know where "some locals over email they tell me...

Libraries : My First Visit To A Library.

Talking of libraries - I have just discovered that the Carnegie library at Selly Oak is now disused [sometime last year?]. I wonder about its' future as it's a listed building. Bit sad about this as I used to be the librarian there many, many years ago. New library opened in the Touchbase Pears...

William Griffith & Sons (Birmingham) Ltd

Browsing on the Forum, as you do, and came across this post [very interesting] & remembered seeing quite a description of the factory on the urban exploration site called "28 Days Later". This site has lots of stuff on old Birmingham buildings & factories. Free to use but need to register...
